Recently the italian firm FONIT-CETRA has published some cheap cds (Lit 14,000, about 11$), with the subtitle "Le grandi scelte" (The great choices). They are historical performancies, recorded mainly between 1955 and 1965. I tried the 2nd piano concerto by Brahms, played by Wilhelm Backhaus and conducted by Von Karajan (Wien, 1962). The performance is good, but the recording is really bad. Even if I consider the date (1962), I think there are many recordings much better made in those years. Moreover, these cds are sold in a cardboard box. My conclusion: if you don't like historical recordings, avoid these discs. Claudio Muggia

Fonit-Cetra often has poor recordings. The recording quality, of course, it not the point of these issues. I suspect that some may even have been taped from radio broadcasts. 'Historic Reissue' in general (not just Fonit-Cetra), is a buzzword for 'terrible recording of interesting performers'. George | |||||

As you probably know, FONIT-CETRA is associated to RAI, the italian radio and television state company. RAI organizes concerts in Turin, Milan, Rome and Naples, so that they have a lot of recordings, sometimes good. But the cd I bought is not recorded by RAI: I suspect it can be a so called "pirate" recording. Claudio |
