EVEN THOUGH I WAS A TEENAGER IN THE LATE 50'S I DON'T RECALL THE ROCKABILLY ERA AS SUCH. I BOUGHT A ROCKABILLY CD RECENTLY AND HADN'T HEARD ANY OF THE SONGS. I UNDERSTAND RICKY NELSON WAS SOMEWHAT OF A ROCKABILLY ARTIST. I GUESS I WAS ASLEEP WHEN THIS EAR WENT THROUGH. ANYBODY REMEMBER ROCKABILLY? MABEY THIS IS THE WRONG PLACE TO BE ASKING THIS QUESTION. I remeber rockabilly (just a little!!). It was a short-lived attempt to popularize the style of some of the country/western bar singers. People didn't seem to eat it up as much as was hoped... Rockabilly is still alive in those bars, but the people that listen to it every night don't know that it has a special name - to them, it's the only kind of music that there is :-) Vernon P.S. Someone is gonna say it anyway, so I might as well say it now. When you write a Note, don't use all upper case, BECAUSE IT'S REALLY HARD ON THE EYES. | |||||

I don't know if Carl Perkins would appreciate being called a bar singer, but he is generally credited with the advemt of rockabilly in the middle fifties. Other popular artists such as Guy Mitchell, Gene Vincent, Marty Robbins, and even the King Himself kept it alive for several years afterward. |
