749.0. "Mozart Symphonies (esp. 40 & 41)" by PDVAX::P_DAVIS (Peter Davis (aka SARAH::P_DAVIS)) Fri May 08 1987 11:06

    I've just seen an ad for a Telarc CD of Mozart's 40th and 41st
    symphonies, conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras (sp?). Has anyone
    heard this? Recommendations pro or con? I have been generally
    impressed with the Telarc label, so I thought this looked promising.

    I have 3 recordings of these discs already, and I'm not totally
    satisfied with any of them. Of the ones I have, I like the
    Hogwood/Academy of Ancient Music ones the best. Hogwood takes them
    too fast for my taste, however.

    Thanks.

    Funny you should mention this...a friend of mine just bought this
    one last weekend. I promptly invited myself over for a listen.

    The performance was quite good; not outstanding but not insipid.
    The recoding was typical Telarc (read: high quality, DDD, perhaps
    just a tiny "bit" flat on overall response).

    Conclusion: while I don't think I'll go to the extreme of saying
    this is THE definitive version, it is generally excellent and I
    don't think you will be disappointed. Of course, I'm sure Alan
    Rollow will be reviewing it in the near future...he seems to buy
    *everything* Telarc releases!      ;-)

749.2I don't have *ALL* the Telarc's.COOKIE::ROLLOWMurphy's Law applies.Sun May 10 1987 14:195
    My review of the Telarc recording with Mozart's symphonies (40 &
    41) is in 473.15.  I haven't heard the Hogwood, so I don't know
    how fast it is, but Sir Charles (Mackerras) uses a very fast
    tempo in the minuet (dotted half note = 72/76 for the 40th and
    88 in the 41st).
