727.0. "JVC Model XL330 Problems" by AUTHOR::MACDONALD (WA1OMM Listening 224.28) Mon Apr 20 1987 13:01

I recently picked up the JVC Model XL330 on sale for $199 at
Lechmere. I noticed on a couple of disks I was playing that the
player would skip a bit -- actually, it would jump back 4 seconds.
Some further investigation revealed a consistent skip at about 54
seconds into every CD I tried!

Well, I boxed it up and brought it down to Lechmere for a refund.
I might have considered an exchange, but I noticed two more XL330's
sitting at the return counter. Made we wonder about their terrific
33% off sale on that model! So, I decided to bite the bullet and
fork over the few extra dollars for the XL700 instead. A bit pricey,
but a good machine from what I've read. My week-long experience
with CD's taught me a little bit about the inconvenience of not
having a changer built into the player. Well, Lechmere in Nashua was out
of stock (despite the fact that they were to go on sale today).
So, off I went to Lechmere in Manchester where I picked up the XL-700 and
also learned that most of the XL330's that were sold during the sale
had been returned due to the same skipping problem I had experienced!

I suppose even in Japan, they tip a few on the assembly line.

There was a "notice" in the Sunday Globe that the JVC changer
player would not be available, but that Lechmere would substitute
something of "comparable value". From past experience, these
tend to be good deals - did you ask if they were substituting
    anything?

A similar situation happened to me when I bought my BOSE speakers
from Lechmere in Manchester. I paid for the speakers, then went
to the 'pick-up' counter. I waited an unusually long time,
and I overheard a confused stock boy tell a manager that they could
only locate one speaker. I was almost ready to walk away disappointed,
when suddenly, a manager located a mate for my speaker. I was so
relieved to be finally getting my speakers, that I didn't question
why one carton was already open.

I got home and found that one speaker was neatly factory packed,
while the other was hurriedly re-packaged upside-down. I plugged
them in and also found that one made a beautiful sound, while the
other had a terrible rattle. I began to realized that one of my
speakers was probably found in the REJECT stack.

I couldn't exchange the defective speaker at the Manchester store
because they were out, so I exchanged it at the Pheasant Lane Mall.
I'm happy now, but should never have been given a unit that was
ALREADY returned. I WAS NOT GOING TO PAY $300 FOR A USED OR DEFECTIVE
SPEAKER. I guess they must have figured that I wouldn't notice!

On another occasion, I observed a salesman open the cover of a broken
CD player and attempt repair. I doubt that the salesman had any
    knowledge of electronics.

Has anyone else had this type of problems with Lechmere? This makes
two of us that have been screwed, so let's file a formal complaint.

This can happen at any store. If you are worried, then don't accept
delivery of any box that isn't factory sealed. In any case,
Lechmere has an EXTREMELY liberal return policy, so there's no way
you can get burned unless you make a point of doing so.

Lechmere's policy, as told to me, is that returned (opened)
merchandise is never sold as new - they always mark it as returned
    or repaired.

The Manchester store had them in stock. Nashua and the others in
Mass did not. Unfortunately, the XL-700 is the only CD Player I
know of that has both a cartridge AND a single disk tray. Pioneer
has the single slot that can be used for either a multi-CD cartridge
    or a single-CD tray.

What's so unfortunate about it? The extra disk tray on mine has
been a real convenience, when I want to check a track or two on
a single CD (and not unload the machine). Not to mention the fact
that it gives you 7 CD's worth of listening time if you've got a
    whole day to kill...

All in all, the XM700 turned out to be one of the best buys around
for features and price in my book. Even the cartridges are cheaper
in price than the Pioneer model. I wholeheartedly recommend this
player to anyone looking for mid-range units loaded with extras.

Unfortunate in the sense that its too bad that the substitute system
doesn't have the combo cartridge/try loader. I really like the
    convenience that my 700 offers.

    I've had a 700 model for a few months now, and I LOVE it ! It's
great to be able to load up 7 disks and walk away for hours. One
thing about the xl700, tho, don't load up 7 disks and hit the RANDOM
play button ! You'll really give the changer a workout !
