719.1 | what kind is it? | NCADC1::PEREZ | Batches, we don't need no stinkin' batches | Sat Apr 11 1987 23:06 | 5 |
| Having never heard anything by this person, could you give a bit
of a description of the kind of music she plays.
Thanks,
Dave

719.2 | Previous Suzanne Ciani LP work | ISWSW::SHIHPE | Peter P. Shih - Internal Software Services/West | Mon Apr 13 1987 12:03 | 9 |

I also have "The Velocity Of Love" on CD and enjoy it quite a lot.
I have another LP by Suzanne Ciani (The Seven Waves) which was the
preecursor to the CD (the 1st track on the CD is "The Eighth Wave").
The sound and enginering on this LP is more "primitive" sounding
than "The Velocity Of Love" and is also completely synthesizers
(no acoustic instruments). Between the two albums, I prefer "The
Velocity Of Love" because of its better production and blend of
instruments used.

719.3 | Actually, she's an old-timer! | KALLON::EIRIKUR | Eirkur Hallgrmsson | Tue Apr 14 1987 17:38 | 16 |
| Lovely disc, indeed. Somewhere between light jazz and new age.
Romantic photo of her on the back, not at all what I would expect
based on her interviews in electronic music publications over the
years.
Suzanne Ciani (wish I knew how to pronounce Ciani!) has been around
for a long time. She's known for some older fairly experimental
electronic music, mostly atonal, including some soundtrack work
for the film "Midnight Cowboy." She's done a lot of work for
television ads. The famous Coca-Cola gurgle came from her Buchla
modular analog machine. I don't have a discography, unfortunately.
It's interesting to see that one of the new releases on Larry Fast's
Audion label thanks her for the use of her studio.

It's probably pronounced like "chonnie", but it may have been
American-ized to "see-annie."
Of course, you have no business complaining about unpronouncable
names ... Yours won't even display on my VT100.

719.5 | | AKOV68::BOYAJIAN | Have a merely acceptable day | Wed Apr 15 1987 02:39 | 12 |
| I tried looking her up in NEW ROCK RECORD for a discography,
but she's not listed. Not pop enough for them, I guess.
WMRQ just played something of hers about a half-hour ago. The
DJ pronounced her name just as I suspected it would be pronounced
based on my knowledge of Italian pronounciation: "Chee-ahn'-ee"
re:.4
And what's wrong with Eirkur's name? :-)

719.6 | Not to get too far off the subject, but ... | PDVAX::P_DAVIS | Peter Davis, X-NYer | Wed Apr 15 1987 10:59 | 8 |
| Re/ .5:
Actually, I think that in Italian, the "Chee-ahn" would get pronounced
as "Chon", in one syllable. I'm not sure, but I think that's the
usual treatment of "ci", such as in the word "ciao".
Nothing's wrong with Eirkur's name, but it doesn't display correctly
on my VT100.

719.7 | In the same New Age Wave... | MQFSV1::LEDOUX | This Space Intentionally left Blank | Fri Jul 10 1987 20:57 | 12 |

For those New Age music fans, I would like to recommend
Johannes Schmoelling last (and only solo) CD named
"Wuivend Riet". All computer-acoustic music, relaxing
for us, always tired DEC employees. Easy ambiance music
with a good rythm. Definitely something there.
Label: Erdenklang (W. Germany)
Catalog #: ERD 2-87015
Unfortunatly AAD, but no complain about recording though.
Only for New Age lovers.

719.8 | In the same vein: Edgar Froese | DSSDEV::HALLGRIMSSON | Eirkur Hallgrmsson | Fri Jul 31 1987 17:03 | 16 |
|
While we're discussing mellow "new-age" music, I'd like to recommend
"Epsilon in Malaysian Pale" by Edgar Froese. This album from the early
'70s has just been released on CD by Virgin, the original label. It
consists of fantasies for the Mellotron, the essentially unique
magnetic-tape-based orchestral keyboard. Very pleasant, very
relaxing--one of my favorite recordings of all time.
I'm still looking for "Wuivend Riet" as mentioned in .7. No luck
in the Boston area so far. Any pointers appreciated!

719.9 | Ciani on sampling | DSSDEV::HALLGRIMSSON | Eirkur Hallgrmsson | Mon Aug 03 1987 14:26 | 12 |
| There's an article by Suzanne Ciani in the current (August 87) issue
of "MCS: Music, Computers and Software." This magazine is getting
good distribution in the U.S. now; many newstands have it.
She discusses the impact of digital sampling keyboards on the typical
commercial music and sound effects that she has done in the past.
My favorite comment (indirect quote from memory) "Now that I have
samplers no one wants chainsaws playing Beethoven anymore."

719.10 | NEVERLAND | AKOV11::BOYAJIAN | Monsters from the Id | Fri May 13 1988 07:48 | 11 |
| I kept forgetting to mention that a new Suzanne Ciani disc has
appeared:
NEVERLAND Private Music 2036-2-P
Based on a single listen, I would rate it a tad below THE VELOCITY
OF LOVE, but still very much worth listening to.
(It took me *ages* to finally find a copy of TVOL!)
