713.0. "Kitaro" by QUARK::LIONEL (Free advice is worth every cent) Thu Apr 09 1987 22:05

    (I did a DIR/TITLE and didn't see anything...)

I've been hearing a lot about Kitaro, and I finally got a chance
to hear some music from his "Oasis" album. I'm interested in
buying a CD or two, but would like suggestions as to which ones
I should look at first. My taste in "new age" music tend to lean
more towards the Fresh Aire "bouncy" type, but I liked Andreas
Vollenweider's "Down to the Moon" also. I don't want strictly
    "air pudding" stuff.

HMMMMMMMM. I've heard two of the Kitaro albums, "Millennia" and
"Silver Cloud". Of them I preferred "Silver Cloud".

In any case, both sounded similar to Andreas Vollenweider
and/or Mannheim Steamroller. I rather like them. Of course, my
"air pudding" quotient is fairly high!!! At least I think it is?

713.2Pretty Familiar With KitaroEXODUS::LEVYJon LevyFri Apr 10 1987 18:4316

I've listened to most of his CD's, and my 1st choice is Silk Road I.
It always has an immediate effect on my spirits, and it was extremely
popular among customers at the record store I used to work at. I
have Oasis too, but Silk Road I definitely rates above it; Silk
Road II, on the other hand, I didn't care for very much. There's
another one I have that's a Japanese import, on Canyon Records,
but no English title. It has some Japanese women swirling around
on the cover; I like that one too.

As for "air pudding" vs. "bouncy": Kitaro is definitely not as
percussive as Mannheim Steamroller. I would describe Kitaro as
more melodic, but not repetitive as Philip Glass can sometimes be.

I obtained KITARO's latest: TENKU thru the Compact Disc Club and
    like it.

    It is fully digitally recorded.
Please note the use of the Kurtzweil synthesizer.
