712.0. "BLUE NOTE Classics on CD!" by BETHE::LICEA_KANE () Wed Apr 08 1987 23:01

They're *FINALLY* here! Lot's of them.

Oh, it's so wonderful to hear 1962 Dexter Gordon (25 years before
he was nominated for an oscar)...

Herbie Hancock's FIRST album (First track, the classic Watermellon
Man, with Gordon and Hubbard of course)...

Sonny Rollins *live* at the Vanguard in '57 (I found volume 2
this time, looking for the first 60 minutes of the set now)....

Oh, there were so many. How can you chose which to take home
first? Take home any of them! How can you lose?

They are all A-D, no remasters, the recordings are directly off
the original two track analog tapes. Sound? Excellent, but who
cares. It's the MUSIC that's wonderful.

For those in the Boston area, check out the Coop. All the Blue
Note Classics are together in one area above the normal flip
bins. Check out what's out there, and then shop around for the
best price. But don't be surprised if you come back and pay any
price for the one you just *have* to have today.

It's from the CD "Maiden Voyage", a Blue Note recording made in the mid 60s.
It contains some of his most brilliant work before he went "electric" with
a cast that includes Freddie Hubbard and Wayne Shorter.

I've seen it a number of Bay Area record stores including Classical Wax in
Menlo Park.

Hot Damn!! Someone mentioning a record store *outside*
        New England!! ;']

Where is Classical Wax? I don't recall seeing the store.
Are their prices reasonable? (are anyone's??)

The first Blue Note Classic CD I purchased was Hancock's Maiden
Voyage. It was a landmark recording.

Andy, Classical Wax is three blocks off El Camino Real in Menlo Park
on a side street. Don't have a map handy for the cross street. They
also have a parking lot across from the store so parking is easy.
Haven't been there in ages so I cann't tell you their prices, but
when last there they where only slightly higher than Tower Records.
They have a large selection of classical records on both LP and
    CD.
712.6Classical Wax has movedTHE780::ALVIDREZThe State of the ArtieFri Apr 10 1987 13:5017
Actually, they've recently relocated to the small shopping complex on
El Camino Real just across the street from Chili's. It's right next
door to Kepler's books.

As far as CD prices are concerned, they are usually on the high side,
$15.99-16.99 per disk. They used to specialize in Classical recordings,
but they've recently boosted their stock by adding a lot of jazz
re-releases on CD. In fact, they have a lot of the new Beatles stuff
on CD. Their name doesn't seem to match their stock anymore.

I've been disappointed in their CD selections on the classical side lately.
For example, all their Vivaldi stuff consisted of seven copies of the
same recording of the Four Seasons and that's it! You'll find a better
selection at any Tower's.

I found the Herbie Hancock "Maiden Voyage" CD in the "Jazz
Sale" bin (or however they mark it) at BCD for I think $12.99.
	Good disk!
