710.0. "Changes to CD Pricing" by EXODUS::LEVY (Jon Levy) Tue Apr 07 1987 20:33

    I have been told by a good friend of mine, who also is a very
    successful music retailer, that the pricing structure of CD's may
    change later this year. Specifically, CD reissues of existing
    catalogue would be priced lower than new material by established
    artists. For those chomping at the bit to replace their collections
    of Yes, Traffic, etc., it might pay to wait a few more months...

710.1So, put yourself in the mindset of a marketing type...SSDEVO::OAKEYSCUBA diving -- The only way to fly!Tue Apr 07 1987 22:345
    Which would mean, if I can outguess the marketing types, that the
    price of new material would go UP. Heaven forbid the price of the
    old stuff to go down!

    Seriously, the list price being tossed around for this midline is
    ~9.98. Remember, record companies sell *product* in LARGE unit
    volumes, and worldwide CD capacity is increasing by leaps and bounds.
    You don't sell an extra 20 million units by increasing your price...

710.3But, then again, Yessong was only $24.99CASPRO::DLONGSuperfight? By-Tor in 3!Fri Apr 10 1987 10:287
    Well, as far as Yes is concerned, I was at Rockit Records yesterday
    and growled audibly when I saw new 'cheap CD' bin.

    In there I found "Fragile" and "Close to the Edge" for $11.99.
    Normally, they are $15.99

    Grrrrrr.
710.4Columbia Budget ClassicsAQUA::ROSTWho could imagine?Fri Apr 10 1987 16:128
    I was in the City Hall Music store in marlboro yesterday and saw
    some Columbia "Great Performances" CDs for $10. The Lps and cassettes
    of these have been out for a number of years for $5.98 list...
    They are the ones with the newspaper headline style covers..

    They are old Masterworks stuff from the 60's and are the usual popular
    repetoire, you know, "Bolero", Beethoven's Fifth, New World Symphony,
    etc.
