For those with a taste of Leonard Cohen's lyrics I suggest a just released CD by Jennifer Warnes under the title "Famous Blue Raincoat". This lady has been around for quite a while and has done a lot of vocal backup behind some big name artists over the years. I believe its her first release and has one track with Cohen on it. Its DDD and I give it a 10. The album ranked as #1 two weeks running in these neck of the woods in March/87. The CD release was delayed and didn't hit the stores till the first of March. Dave Hooper

I first heard Jennifer Warnes on a tape I made of a Tom Rush concert that WGBH broadcast a few years back. I was so taken with her two numbers in that concert ("Song of Bernadette", which is on FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT, and Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More"), that I went looking for her albums, but only ran across one in all my travels. She's had about a half dozen albums since her first in the late 60's. FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT seems to be the first to really get her some notice. Lots of nice songs on it. WMRQ, the radio station I listen to hear at work likes to play "Like a Bird" a fair amount. I've known *of* Leonard Cohen as a songwriter prior to this, but, with two exceptions (the aforementioned "Song of Bernadette" and "Suzanne", which was done by Judy Collins over 15 years ago) never heard any of his songs until this album. The really shock, though was hearing Stevie Ray Vaughan's guitar licks on the "I'll Take Berlin". --- jerry | |||||

I believe Cohen released around 5 albums during the late 60s through early 70s. His early ones are the best. As a poet his lyrics are great but you either like his songs or you don't. If your interested I would hazard a guess you'd only be able to pick up his albums in larger cities (New York, Boston). If not there certainly in Montreal or Toronto. Dave Hooper |
