| Frankly, I find his older stuff boring. It all sounds the same.
Newer things I've heard have some emotion.
Two CD's to try are the McLaughlin, DiMeola, DeLucia compilations.
They get pretty intense. I like the second one a little better
(with the beach picture). The first one, Friday Night in SanFrancisco
shows off Paco DeLucia, who REALLY plays fast using finger style.
Both CDs sound good (I assume because the LPs are good). McLaughlin's
still my favorite and my Shakti albums have survived >100 plays.

I think that one is "Pasion, Grace and Fire" Mark. I listen to it
without looking at the label... and is indeed much better than
his older stuff.

I have "Soaring through a dream" - only one. And I like it a lot
- very mellow, mood music, almost. Are any of his other records
in the same vein?

| I have that one too, and another recent one C____ de T____(?).
Both were cut-outs and I liked "Soaring...", but not the other one.
Previous stuff is fast with much flaminco influence.

I have a couple of Al DiMeola CD's. I don't know about the old
vs. new stuff, but the Casino CD is very good. It's got some mellow
songs on it, and also some pretty fast pace stuff. A really good
mix.

Al has 'evolved' as a composer, always had compelling raw talent
but has moved lately to a more 'new age' sound, even reminicent
of some Metheny stuff (because of his use of the Synclavier).
He started out playing with Chick Corea and Return to Forever
at age 17 ! Best albums with Al are 'Where have I Known You
Before' and 'Romantic Warrior' (HOT!). His first solo album
was 'Land of the Midnight Sun', good work, but poor sound
quality. Then came 'Elegant Gypsy', which contains a duet with
Paco de Lucia and 'Race with the Devil...'. Next was 'Casino'
which is a very fine disc, very polished and refined. He then
tried a more electronic approach, with Jann Hammer, I believe
the album is 'Electric Cat', then came 'Scenario', which was
underrated, and then the 2 latest on Manhattan's label.
If you're a fan of Al's technical prowess, I recommend Elegant
Gypsy, Casino, and RTF's Romantic Warrior ... all on CD.
PS - even Rick Wakeman has a 'new age' CD out now .......

692.7 | "Romantic Warrior" on CD!? Where? | MANTIS::MILLER | smarter than the average bear | Wed Apr 22 1987 10:02 | 10 |

I have been actively in search of 'Romantic Warrior' on CD for months
now (My vinyl copy has been played so much it sounds like Rice
Krispies). I still haven't seen it listed in the Schwann catalog and
haven't had any luck finding it. If you could tell me where I can find
a copy I'd really appreciate it!
BTW I think the album with Jan Hammer is 'Electric Rendesvous' -
I'm listening to a tape of it right now - good stuff!
