689.0. "Another novice..." by MRMFG3::N_BEAUDET () Thu Mar 26 1987 09:42

    I am entering the world of CD...

    I am about to ad an SAE D-102 player to my SAE system.
    I have a couple of questions...

    - I have been surprised about how little (myself included) folks
      know about "buying" Compact Discs...and how hard it seems to be
      (for me anyway) to get good information...literature of any kind.

      I have already heard about the vast differences between CDs, some
      are indexed, stay away from certain brands...etc...

      So, is there any source of information that is reliable to aid
      in making CD purhcases?

    - Does anyone know if Peter Framton's double live album is available
      on CD - and is it a quality CD?

    - Are there any "TDK" type calibration/check-out disks available
      to the consumer...or is there a "top rated" CD that will "test
      the limits" of my player?

    Thanks for any response...

689.1Frampton comes Alive?HPSCAD::WALLI see the middle kingdom...Thu Mar 26 1987 11:007

    Are you asking about Frampton Comes Alive?

    Yes, it's on CD. And the recording is very good, at least as far
    as my ears can tell.

    The Frampton live disc is available, but only on single disc with
    some tracks left out. I have noticed that there is some distortion
    on certain cuts, but have not compared it with an LP yet. Friends
    listening to the disc thought I was loosing a speaker when the guitar
    distortion showed up. If it is also in the LP version, it is not
    as noticable. Still a pretty good disc.

    Digital Audio and Compact Disc Magazine is one source of information
    about discs. There are many others. The Green Catalog might
    be helpful. Read through this notes file too.
