675.0. "Jesus Christ Superstar" by SCREEN::FIELDHOUSE () Wed Mar 11 1987 12:53

I have noticed while looking through this notes file that there
are several people interested in getting a Jesus Christ
         Superstar CD.

Yesterday, while in Lechmere I noticed about 5 2 Disc sets of
the MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK. Good (not great) news. Finding
them that way indicates that they will probably be generally
         available for a while.

What would be great news is that the original studio recordings
( with Ian Gillam, Murray Head etc.) of JCS are making their
way to the CD medium To my mind this is an album that is
ideal for CD and I'm suprised not to have found it already.
What I would like to know is this: Has anybody with their ears
to the rumor mill heard any whisperings of this recording being
made into compact discs? I'm pretty certain that it is not
currently on CD (though I'd love to be wrong). On a more
general note, is there any reliable (or sort of reliable or
maybe useful if the moon is full) way of finding out if a
recording is going to be made into CDs?

The Schwann CD Catalog listed the soundtrack for JCSS among their
new releases this month, but I haven't seen it yet. Glad to hear
    it made it.

There is also a CD of the original London cast of the stage production.
I agree that neither of these matches the original studio recording,
but it's nice to know they're there.

As for finding out about planned releases, I know of no really good
source. One possibility is to read "Digital Audio and Compact
Disc Review" every month, looking for such pre-announcements. However,
    Wayne Green's self-indulgence and narrow-mindedness make that a
somewhat unpleasant chore. Another idea is to ask in CD shops,
like BCD, since the owners order the titles before most people hear
    about them.

You could also consult the various catalogs, like the Green Compact
Disc Catalog, the Schwann CD Catalog, and the Gramophone Compact
Disc Catalog. These list titles which are already released or
scheduled for release. They don't give you much of a look into
the future, but sometimes the listed titles don't appear for several
    months.

I have seen copies of the original cast recording (w/
Ian Gillan) of JC Superstar on CD; but they've been cut to
fit on a single disk. What made me even angrier is the movie
version has been released on two disks. Ted Neely doesn't
even hold a candle to Ian. I'm not sure exactly what's been
cut, but I don't remember seeing "Pilate and Christ" on the
        label.

Maybe they'll try to go for as much $ as possible and release
it a second time complete, like they did with Peter Gabriel's
        "Plays Live".

        Grrrrrrr...........

I noticed that the Original London Stage version CD released in the
UK has the same cover design as the original studio recording LP.
Don't make the mistake that I almost did and buy the wrong one.

While the design is the same, I believe that the London Cast
version has the cover done in black or a very dark brown while
the original studio album was done in a dark (but still lighter)
    brown.

675.5The "real" JCSS is outPDVAX::P_DAVISPeter Davis (aka SARAH::P_DAVIS)Mon Jul 27 1987 13:117
Well, the "real" original recording is available on CD, at least in the
U.K. It's a two disc set, in a double box, with a cover design that
bears no resemblance to the original release. It's a pretty ugly
cover, with some kind of starburst design reminiscent of the Joshua
light show. However, it is the same recording, with Ian Gillian, Murray
Head, Yvonne Elliman, etc. BCD in Harvard Square had a copy for the
outrageous price of $40, but notice I said "had".

I take it you bought it, Peter?

    Actually, $40 isn't *too* outrageous. Since it's a 2-disc set,
that's $20 per, which is not that far out of line for a British
    import (which are usually $18.99-19.99).

Well, after *.-1, I went on a disc hunt this weekend and I've got a
bit of a warniang to those of you who are unaware of the crafty nature of the
record business.

There is an easily obtainable version of JC for $33 which comes in two
single jewl boxes and has a picture of JC on it. It also does *NOT* have a
list of the cast. This version is the MOVIE soundtrack and not the British
play version. I mention this only because it's the first time I've seen it and
I suspect that somebody is hoping that somebody else will buy it thinking it's
the real thing!

Every copy of the movie soundtrack I have seen mentions the fact
that it's the movie soundtrack and not the original. I've never
    had any problem noticing.

O.K. I *want* this album. It came out when I was about 9 years
old and I got it then. It was in fact the first record that I ever
owned. I have loved it ever since. Perhaps this a trifle odd,
    but then, so am I...

I called some of the "finer" cd stores in the area over the weekend
and they all said "sorry but we're trying to get more but it doesn't
look like anybody is getting it right now..."

I'm looking for advice. With its arrival in London, is it safe
to assume that it will soon be reasonably easy to accquire on this
side of the pond in some time period less than 6 months? If not
is it currently fairly easy to get in England? If the answer to
the first is NO and the second is YES then I guess I'll have to
make a few transatlantic phone calls...

    Thanks for any help.
