670.0. "Best retail prices??" by KRYPTN::JASNIEWSKI () Mon Mar 09 1987 08:05

Having finally purchased my first CD player, a Magnavox from
Sears, I'm interested in where the best places to buy the disks
    - retail - are in the "Boston" area. I've got 5 so far - for $80.

Seems I heard of some store that has them for $10 a pop, maybe
there's a catch, like you have to spend $100, but I do recall that
CDs are all they sell. Does anybody know the name of this
    establishment?

Also, I've seen in "HiFi" mags the CD clubs - get 3 for a penny
*if* you buy 2 more at the "regular" ($20??) club prices. I've read
the RCA club note entry...Do you folks honestly think this is a
good way to pick up a "few"?

    	Thank-you for your thoughts...

    	Joe Jas

    [honest mode on]

I got 3 CD's for a $1.00, and had to buy two more at regular club
prices (with postage and handling turned out to be $17.50 per).
So that's 5 CD's for $36.00 which if I do my math right means I
got each disk for an average price of $7.20 each.

yes, *HONESTLY*, I'd have to say i think it's a good way to pick
    up some disks.

    Re. 0.

I think the store you're referring to is Boston Compact Disc in
    Harvard Square. Very good selection.

Unfortunately, as far as the $10/disc is concerned, BCD sells
*used* discs for that price. Most new discs are $15.99.

Good luck, and welcome to CD-mania!

re .0, .1

Cd clubs also have specials periodically where some discs sell for 9.99 and
other on-going specials like buy one get the next one 1/2 price, etc...

It's not such a bad idea to join, do your required purchasing, quit and
then re-join six-months later !

All in all, a good deal.

There is a selection of low-priced classical disks from Moss Music
Group at BCD, for either 9.99 or 11.99 (I think the former but am
not positive). They are, unfortunately, in cardboard sleeves,
but the artists seemed decent (i.e. Tokyo String Quartet).

670.5Thanx, guys!KRYPTN::JASNIEWSKITue Mar 10 1987 07:2411

I find myself buying CDs to cover "old" albums that have sorta
died or were lost along the way -

It's unlikely that I'll find these "on sale" - I mean, if you
were a store, would you sale price "ZZ Top: Afterburner" or "ELP:
Brain salad surgery" - a 10 year old goodie!

Thanx for your replies. Think I'll check out the RCA club.

I just dumped RCA in favor of Columbia - check out both initial offerings
first, if possible, and then decide.

I prefer Columbia over RCA also. One thing that really irked me
about RCA was the fact that they charged shipping and handling on
EACH disk, even if they were all mailed together -- Columbia doesn't
    do this.

Columbia also seems to have a better selection.

So, do you think they'd give you a free CD for getting yourself to join?

    	RJ,
And I was always told that it was impossible to be in
two places at the same time...and here you go doing it. ;-)
