| I know what you mean about "666" - I wonder how Jerry feels having
his note being the "number of the beast."
Can you give us a little more info on Kate Bush? Folks I know either
love her or hate her, but I've never listened to her music - can
you describe it? I'm an adventurous sort, but I hate to buy costly
CD's blind.
Thanks,

Re: .1
Well, I'm not Rob, but I'll answer anyway (sorry, Rob) . . .
I hear that you either love Kate or hate her, but personally I
can't see how anyone could hate her. Of course, who am I to
speak since I love her . . .
Anyway, the quickest answer to your question I can think of is
this: "Buy her first album (`The Kick Inside') on CD." I'd say
that it's probably her most accessible album. That's not to say
that it's less than perfection, of course. I've heard every album
except `The Dreaming', and I can tell you that I like her first
the best.
I would *not* get `The Whole Story' (a recent compilation) first.
I also have a video of Kate `Live at Hammersmith Odeon'. Superb.
I've been staring at an import of `The Dreaming' for weeks. The thing
costs $20. I'm waiting for the EMI-America release, which should be
out any day now.

I like her stuff, too, but I would recommend LIONHEART as a
first try. I didn't think her voice was up to snuff on her
first album.
Anyways, she does a mixture of styles --- avant garde, ballad,
progressive folk, and so on --- and resists pigeonholing.

well...I *would* recommend "The Whole Story" for a first time buyer
*because* Kate's music is so varied. I dislike "The Kick Inside"
as an LP, "Hounds Of Love" however is *brill*! Get the compilation
and you get practically every aspect of this lady's great talent,
then decide on your individual LP purchases.

As you can see from the previous replies, opinions on Kate
vary as much as her music.
Info on Kate: (you asked for it...)
Kate writes all her own material, primarily on piano and Fairlight
CMI (Computer Music Instrument). Her voice has a four octave
range - some think a little too high in places. She studied
dance and coreographs her own songs for live shows (one extensive
tour of Europe in '79) and videos (of which commercial tapes
exist).
My first taste of Kate's voice came from her backing tracks
on Peter Gabriel's 3rd eponymously titled L.P.; she's on
`Games without Frontiers' and `No Self Control'. Hearing
these and respecting Gabriel's taste for fellow artists
I bought her first album, "The Kick Inside". It was nearly
a year before I listened to it a second time.
"Kick" was recorded when she was 17, with most of the material
having been written before she was 14. One track, `The Man
With the Child in His Eyes', was recorded by David Gilmour
when she was 15. For the most part, this album, and the 2nd
("Lionheart"), seem geared for the british pop mainstream.
The production is very thick, lots of strings and other standard
tricks. I have grown to love the innocence expressed over some very
adult themes.
Her third album, "Never For Ever", has Kate beginning to take
the production into her own hands; this is also the first
record she released after having met Gabriel. There is a
definite change in direction starting to show with the usage
of non-traditional pop instruments and arrangements.
Kate's first solo production effort was "The Dreaming". I
have found that people either love or hate this record. Because
of this record, I became a Kate Bush fan. The British press
panned it, calling it over-produced, pretensious, and self-centered.
I think there are many strong emotional statements of someone
who has been deeply scarred and is now coming of their own.
The production is incredible - the title track with its digeridu
backing and dual vocal lines tells a twisted tale of the
aboriginal plight, `Houdini' - winding fretless bass lines
pivoted with the shreik in the mind of his wife as Harry is
dropped into the water tank bound in chains. Sure it's complex,
but it makes one think. There are many subtle nuances which I
didn't hear until I bought the CD.
"Hounds of Love" was the first American entrance into the charts.
MTV airplay of `Running Up That Hill' didn't hurt. I think
this is a great record, but I would still have to agree with
Kate herself and say that the fourth is the best.
The previous reply gave some sound advice: if you'd like to
taste a bit of each, "The Whole Story" is a good buy. I can't
expect everyone to appreciate her as much as I.
Thanks for reading my ramblings,
Rob, LA780::LEAS

`Experiment IV' is the only track on "The Whole Story" not
on any previous LP; `Wuthering Heights', the #1 British single
from "The Kick Inside", has a recently rerecorded vocal track.
The difference is amazing, her voice has matured incredibly.
Kate and Gabriel duet on the track `Don't Give Up' from "So".
Has anyone seen the video get any airtime in the states?
Beautiful song... it was released as a single in the UK, but
not here. They may have changed their mind as I recently heard
a rumor that Kate has signed on to Geffen, Pete's current label.
I am quite sure Kate is not on `We Do What We're Told' (Milgram's
37). For the curious, the title refers to the 37% of Dr.
Milgram's experimentees who refused to administer shock treatment
to their subjects. There was a TV special about it several
years ago starring William Shatner as Dr. Milgram.
But I digress...

Yeah. I took the liberty of making that word up. It means:
"BOOTleg vinyl PICture disc"
Actually, I'm not exactly sure it's a bootleg 'cuz bootlegs usually
don't come in the picture disc variety. The sound quality is not far
from that of bootlegs, though. The weird thing is that the record
contains some studio stuff.

PG I, II, and III were released (on CD) a couple months ago. Sound
quality is better than any vinyl, but these albums (especially II)
could stand re-mixing.

recently started to do some serious listening to Kate Bush and I
am falling hard for her ...
A co-worker/friend made a cassette for me from his collection of
Kate Bush CD's. Side A of the tape is "Hounds Of Love" and Side
B is "The Kick Inside". Also, I recently received "The Whole Story"
CD as a gift.
This woman's voice is astonishing. My first reaction was that the
windshield of my car was going to explode a la Ella Fitzgerald and
"Is it live or is it Memorex ??"
At this point, I prefer 'The Kick Inside" to the "Hounds Of Love".
"Wuthering Heights" is hypnotic. Does anyone have the words to
that song?? I would be most grateful if someone did and took a
few minutes to enter them here.
Also, "Oh To Be In Love" and "Room For The Life" are my two other
favorites from "The Kick Inside". "Hounds Of Love" is very good
but I'm wearing out "The Kick Inside".
So, a favor to ask ?? What would you buy next if you were me???
Thanks.

P.S. I have to admit that I have *never* heard anybody use the
words "strange phenomena" in a song before.

| 'The Dreaming' is Kate Bush at her best. Sheer genius. She really
makes effective use of the Fairlight here, which she only began
to do on 'Never For Ever'. I find 'Lionheart' to be her weakest
album. I guess that first listen really makes a difference as to
how people listen to her other albums, since, as mentioned before,
none of her albums are alike. My order of preference;
The Dreaming
Hounds of Love
Never For Ever
The Kick Inside
Lionheart
Ken....
PS. I'll type in the words to 'Wuthering Hights' tonight, if someone
doesn't beat me to it. They'll be the version off of "The Kick
Inside" (as opposed to the new ones on 'The Whole Story' which
I don't have).

Yep. I'll second that. My $0.02 worth goes something like this:
"The Dreaming" -- must be played on an excellent home system and
LISTENED TO CLOSELY. No, you can't read the evening
newspaper with this on in the background! It's
a coin-toss for me as to which is better, this
album or "Hounds of Love", but I think this one
is a little less "commercial" than HOL so on most
days (like this one) it comes in first.
"Hounds of Love" -- tracks 1-5 are FANTASTIC for putting on your
car's cassette deck and blasting down the hiway.
The remaining tracks are more in the flavor of
"The Dreaming" but not as intense and are suitable
for casual listening (say, after dinner).
"Never For Ever" -- very experimental, fairly early Kate Bush.
Great in most settings but probably too soothing
for hiway driving (i.e. "Delius", "Army Dreamers").
That's all I have for now. The jury's still out in my mind as to
whether I should pick up "Lionheart" and/or "The Kick Inside" due
to mixed reactions from fellow KB aficionados.
FWIW,
David.

You had a temper, like my jealousy

How could you leave me?

I hated you, I loved you, too
Bad dreams in the night

Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering, Wuthering Heights
Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy come home
I'm so cold, let me in-a-your window
Oh it gets dark, it gets lonely
on the other side from you
I pine alot, I find alot
falls thru without you
I'm coming back love, cool Heathcliff
my one dream, my only master
Too long I roam in the night
I'm coming back to his side to put it right
I'm coming home to wuthering, wuthering, Wuthering Heights

Subject: New Kate Bush album to be called "An Unearthly Child"

Approved: [email protected]
Really-From: [email protected] (Jim Poltrone)
Got his piece of news from someone I know in Britain (no, not IED):
After three years since her album "Hounds of Love", famed British
performace artist Kate Bush has gone into studio to work on her most
recent album, tentatively titled "An Unearthly Child". The album
is scheduled to be released on 23 November 1988, the date which
lots of people remember as the 25th anniversary of "Doctor Who".
For twenty-five years, the time lord has been flying through
our skies, and our TV sets. Recently, the programme has not been
one of the BBC's most popular shows, and some people have been
leery that the programme would eventually be cancelled.
However, according to the show's producer, John Nathan-Turner, there
are plans for this season to be one of the best. "We're very confident
that this will be a banner year for the programme", said Nathan-Turner.
"In fact, to co-incide with the release of Kate's album, she is going to
have a guest role in one of the stories this season. In fact, it's the
first appearance of a musical artist since the Beatles over twenty years
ago. One of my production unit managers, Gary Downie, has been a fan
of Kate for some time now, and he's looking forward to working with her."
Kate herself is thrilled with being associated with the programme. "I
remember seeing the very first Doctor Who, in November of '63. In fact,
I used to hide behind the sofa a lot when the Daleks first appeared.
John always used to taunt me about that. Since then, he's been following
the show more closely than I have been. But it was Paddy's idea that
I appear on the show, after Bonnie [Langford] had her stint. He said
'You can do better than that'. So I talked to my agent about it, and
he rang up Mr. Nathan-Turner."
"It was after I landed the part that I thought of using Doctor Who as
the basis for my latest album. I used to think of myself as Susan --
the first companion -- and what it would be like to travel through time
and space from a child's point of view. Each of the songs are going to
be filled with a feeling of wonder and innocence."
BBC-1 controller Jonathan Powell, when asked about the programme's
future, said "This doesn't mean we're changing the direction of Doctor
Who into a song-and-dance variety show. We still plan on keeping the
drama as the main feature. I feel having Kate Bush on the programme
is a major coup for us, and given her popularity, it will mean a
higher share of the ratings for the programme."

She is *MUCH* better than Newton-John but she has the same kind

but she does not come across as an 'airhead'.

| RE: Date for Kate's next -
I think I heard on the radio just last night mention that it would
be out in February or so (?).

| Yes, the previous response is basically right. There was a recent
interview of Kate in the British magazine 'New Music Express'. In
it, she talks about recording with a Bulgarian trio and that the
album will be out sometime in early '89. I have the text of the
interview if anyone is interested. I don't think I can post it here,
so I won't.
The text that .38 refers to was part of an article published in
'The Guardian' on April 1st.

Is this, perchance, any connection to the recording in 1400.0 ?
I heard the same thing, but the name of the trio escapes me - wasn't
listening too hard. Apparently she heard of them just after
finishing the recording of "Hounds..." - too late to collaborate
there, so only now do we get to hear.....

I've just received the complete collection of letters Kate
has contributed to the _Kate_Bush_Club _Newsletter_, thanks
to Andrew Marvick and the rec.music.gaffa usenet distribution.
There is some extremely interesting stuff here regarding the
origin of Kate's music. It's over 4500 lines long, so I won't
post it here. Send me mail if you're interested in receiving it.

| Has anyone seen Steve Hackett's "Please Don't Touch" on CD, or know
if it's going to be released on CD?
