666.0. "LOVIN' SPOONFUL'S GREATEST HITS" by AKOV68::BOYAJIAN (A disgrace to the forces of evil) Thu Mar 05 1987 04:11
Another favorite group of mine from the 60's. When I saw this
disc, I almost jumped for joy. Sadly, however, I cannot recommend
this CD.
The line-up is as expected. The well-known hits, "Summer in the
City", "Nashville Cats", "Do You Believe in Magic?", et alia,
are here. Oddly enough, there are two cuts that I'm unfamiliar
with, one being "Six O'Clock", the other I forget, rather than
a couple I would've expected to see --- "Younger Girl" and "Rain
on the Roof" (I'm *really* surprised that the latter is missing).
The quality is good, too. Not exceptional, but certainly acceptable.
So why can't I recommend it? Because there are only nine tracks
on this CD, for a total playing time of just a tad over 23 minutes!
Now, I can deal with this somewhat when the company is releasing
an already existing album that happens to be short (like the early
Beatles or Stones albums), but for a compilation CD, having one
this short is inexcusable, especially when there are any number
of other songs that could have been put on it.
I'm glad to have the material on CD, but I'm also glad that I
managed to find it used at BCD for $10, rather than paying the
full price of $16.

666.1 | Better News | AKOV68::BOYAJIAN | A disgrace to the forces of evil | Thu Mar 12 1987 03:23 | 5 |
| I noticed in Rock'n'Mania yesterday the existence of THE VERY
BEST OF THE LOVIN' SPOONFUL. This appears to be the same as
the LP of (nearly --- no "very") the same title.

| Like yourself I also love the group...however I was luckier.
If you can find it get "The Very Best of The Lovin'Spoonful" obn
Buddha Records. All the songs on your disc plus the ones you
wanted...a total of 16 songs (44 min) with terrific sound. I found
it at Vinylmania in Manhattan.

| re:.2
You beat me to it. I just picked this one up (I'll trade in
the other to BCD). I wasn't quite on the mark in .1 --- I
had thought that this was the same as the LP THE BEST OF
THE LOVIN' SPOONFUL (which I have), but once I bought the
CD, I relized that it wasn't. It is, however, the same as
another compilation album called THE VERY BEST OF THE LOVIN'
SPOONFUL, plus four other songs.
Warning: people who are picky might want to know that there
is some noticible hiss on some tracks (especially on "Summer
in the City") and some high-end distortion on other tracks.
But all in all, it sounds pretty good. Not great, but good.
*I'm* happy.

666.4 | Terrific sound, indeed! | DTP::DPARKER | Dave Parker - NCO SWS | Sun Mar 22 1987 11:43 | 12 |
| RE: 2
Terrific sound??? Several of the cuts sound as if
they we remastered from the LP, with all the expected clicks
and pops. The album was re-equalized, and is now much more
bass-shy with a peaky high-end.
My 45 rpm copy of "Younger Girl" sounds better. Although
I love the music, this CD is terrible. Save your money, or
at least listen before you buy it.
