661.0. "Technics SLP-500" by STAR::JACOBI (Paul Jacobi - VAX/VMS Development) Mon Mar 02 1987 08:47
I have owned my SLP-500 since July, and am quite please with it.
I find it every bit a good as the top of the line Sony models. It uses
a fine focus single beam pickup with 2 times oversampling to produce a 96Db
range and a .00025% Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). The unit has only
mistracked about five times since July. I use it almost everyday, and play
a lot of disks from the Nashua Library. In general, I feel the SLP-500
is a very solid and well designed unit. The review in Digital Audio gave
it a rating of four out of five stars
Here's a list of the features that are both on the unit and the
remote control except were noted.
- Digital filter
- 2X oversampling
- Skip < >
- Two speed search << >>
- Index skip
- Music scan - Play first N seconds of every track
- Four time displays
- Auto cue - Enter pause mode between tracks
- Auto space - Add 3 second delay between tracks
- A-B repeat
- Programmable repeat
- 20 step programmable memory with numeric keypad
- Headphone volume control (only on unit)
- 8db DIGITAL output level control (only on remote)
(I guess it left or right shifts all the bits!?!)
It should be noted also that this model has recently been replaced
by the newer SLP-520. It's only new feature is a large dial used for searching
instead of buttons, a 12db output level control, and a new unique new drawer that
touches the disk only in the center. The SLP-520 "feature" also include,
increased size and a less solid cabinet. I paid $449.99 for it at Lechmere's
in The Mall of NH, Manchester. But since the new model has come out, the
SLP-500 is being sold a discount.
