648.0. ""Gamalan" music" by QUARK::LIONEL (Free advice is worth every cent) Sun Feb 22 1987 21:43

I'm looking for recordings (in any format, though CD would be
wonderful) of a type of music I think is called "Gamalan" (or
maybe "Gamalar") - I'm told it's from the island of Java and
uses unusual instruments. I'll enter this in the MUSIC conference
when it comes back, but thought that the CD conference readers
might have heard of it. Catalog numbers, places to buy, etc.
    appreciated. Thanks.

There are a couple of CDs of Gemalan music, but I don't have the
exact titles and numbers. I'll enter them later. One was purchased
at BCD in Cambridge, and the other at Tower Records in New York.

648.2Two Gamelan CDsSARAH::P_DAVISPeter Davis, X-NYerMon Mar 09 1987 10:3610
Here are the two Gamelan CDs I've seen:

    "Gamelan Music in Bali"	CBS/Sony 32DG 58
A Japanese import, purchased at BCD in Cambridge

"MAGIC BALI: le Ramayana"	Playasound PS65003
A French import, purchased at Tower Records in New York

I don't know if either of these is still available.

For what it's worth - I located an LP of Gamelan music: "Javanese
Court Gamelan Vol III" on the Nonesuch Explorer label. The friend
I had bought it for was disappointed to hear the beautiful music,
which she remembered from a concert, drowned out by hideous nasal
whining passing for singing. (At least that was our opinion!)
Apparently there was no singing at the concert she attended.

Do you know if the two CDs you mention are just instrumentals, or
    do they also contain singing?

Since this topic has detoured into LP land, I have an album, also
on Nonesuch Explorer, titled "Music for a Balinese Shadow Play"
featuring the Gamelan music without "vocals".

Perhaps checking out Balinese music will yield some CDs. The music
    is hauntingly beautiful.
