630.0. "Cheap prices ????" by PSBU::LEY () Mon Feb 02 1987 11:17

      If everything goes according to plan, I will be going to Hong
    Kong in about a month. Does anyone out there have any idea what
    prices are like for electronic gadgets, i.e. CD players, Walkman
    type cassette players, etc?

630.1Pirated CD's in Hong Kong?STAR::JACOBIPaul Jacobi - VAX/VMS DevelopmentTue Feb 03 1987 13:249
    I had a friend back at school who lived in Hong Kong. He said that
    stereo equipment was actually MORE expensive there. He WAS able
    to buy pirated copies of Comp. Sci. text book extremely cheep. They
    don't seem to be quite as strict on copyright laws over there.
    I wonder if you could get some pirated CD's real cheep...?

I've got a friend who is in Seoul right now. He says that
pirated records and tapes are really cheep (and very poor
quality -- I've heard a couple which sounded just awful. -- I
also could tell that they were pirates from the misspellings on
the label e.g. Like a Vegin by Madonna), but the pirates haven't
yet made the capitol investment for CDs. Also, (at least in
Korea) the pirated books and music may begin to disappear, as
the Korean government has just signed international copyright
treaties. [Olympics coming and all] Taiwan and Hong Kong may
follow suit soon. I'm unsure if the agreements affect
published material already issued or just new stuff.

Thought you'd like to know,
R.

    re: .0

    gadgets are certainly cheaper in HK (it used to be called "The Bargain
    Basement of the East", and it's still true), but make sure you buy
    from either a large distributor or from a store in one of the central
    shopping plazas, forget the backstreets, that's where the fakes
    abound! When I was in HK last (which was admittedly three years ago)
    I picked up a Hitachi personal-stereo for equivalent 30pounds, and when
    it eventually went on sale in the UK it retailed at eighty.

    Cassettes are poor quality for sure, but not all of them, it's
    hard to tell a bootleg from the proper stuff unfortunately coz they're
    such good quality forgeries (!), that is until you've played it for
    a few weeks and the tape starts to fall apart. I'd steer clear
    of buying cassettes....CD's I can't comment on. (which is kinda
    strange considering this note is in the CD notesfile! :-))

                           Ian!

630.4Be verrry Careful, we're hunting bargains...LA780::GOLDSMITHReserved for Future Use.Wed Feb 04 1987 12:5018
    My parents and sister travel to Hong Kong often, on recent trips
    they say that bargains are getting harder to come by.

    Stereo Equipment is now almost as expensive in Hong Kong as it is
    here, the reason for this is increased Australian tourism in the
    area. The Aussies pay a lot more then we do for electronic stuff,
    so the now higher prices still seem like bargains.

    CDs are plentiful, but expensive. They run anywhere from US$10-20.
    There are a lot of bootlegs to be found, even sometimes a Beatles
    White album or two. The quality of these is horrible! Be very careful!

    Also, be careful of ripoff items. The US Customs service will seize
    some copyright ripoffs on your return.

    Happy Shopping!
