590.0. "DDD Satie?" by BLIMP::ANDY_LESLIE (Call me `{o}^{o}') Wed Jan 07 1987 14:49

I'm looking for a Digitally recorded version of Trois Gymnopidies
composed by Erik Satie. The analog recordings of these quiet piano
pieces are always far too noisy and hissy.

If anyone knows of a catalogue entry for this, I'd appreciate knowing
    about it.

I think there is one on Telarc, a compilation, perhaps with Vaughn
    Williams.

I'll have to check the discs to make sure, but the Telarc is
an orchestration of #1 and #3. It is a good disc though.

Philips 412.243 is a disc of Satie piano music (again I'll
have to check the disc). It may be what you want. I'll
listen to both discs tonight when I get home and post a
    a short reply.

Andy-

Not easy to find Satie, is it? But, it certainly is worth the trouble.
I've enjoyed "Satie: 3 Gymnopedies & other piano works" by Pascal
Roge. Below is a list of the contents:

Gymnopedie No. 1 Gnossienne No. 1
Gymnopedie No. 2 Gnossienne No. 2
Gymnopedie No. 3 Gnossienne No. 3
Je te veux Gnossienne No. 4
4 Preludes flasques Gnossienne No. 5
Prelude en tapisserie Gnossienne No. 6
	4eme Nocturne Sonatine bureaucratique
Vieux Sequins et Vieilles Cuirasses	Le Picadilly
	Embryons desseches

This is a May 1983 digital recording (manufactured by Polygram/Hanover)
of London/Decca. The number is 410 220-2. I would think it's easy to
get a copy on your side of the pond.

I got the London (Decca) recording. It is CRAP. Just goes to prove
that digitally recorded, but badly miked, piano, sounds bad on CD
    as much as anything else.

However I just got Yuji Takahashi's rendition (on DENON) and it
    is MUCH better.
