580.0. ""New" Leo Kottke CD." by CEDSWS::NEWKERK () Mon Dec 29 1986 16:44

I just got a CD copy of an early Leo Kottke record called "6 & 12
String Guitar". I had owned a copy of the record a few years ago and
really liked the whole alblum. The transfer to CD seems to have been
very well done. The sound is good and very clean. Given that this is
all acoustic guitar (just Leo) it is very quiet and has little hiss.

This disc is a release from a new lable (to CD's) called Takoma Records.
They also list other releases on the back of the CD, including two
a guitarist named John Fahey(sp?). I have not head any of Fahey's music
and was wondering if anyone had any option of his work?

Takoma is a "musician's" label, which was founded by Fahey to
record people like Kottke who are/were not getting the attention
of the majors. Fahey is a good musician himself, I understand
he has a recent album which has been received well.

Hard to believe Kottke only has 10 fingers when you listen, isn't
    it?

I've cot a couple Fahey albums, including one with both Fahey and
Kottke. If you like Kottke (when he doesn't try to sing), you will
        like Fahey.

I saw the Kottke CD, but didn't buy it under the mistaken
impression that my wife had the album. She doesn't so we will
probably pick one up next time we see it. What did you pay for it.
I seem to remember it being a bit pricy here in Chicago.

Hope they reproduced Kottke's liner notes on the CD of 6 and 12
String Guitar, in which he describes his voice as sounding "like
geese farts on a foggy day."

That's the only way you can understand a subsequent release on
Capitol where he "brought his own geese" for four selections (vocals).
I don't mind his voice -- "Eight Miles High" with his guitar and
rumbling vocal sounds good to me.

Yep. They did include the liner notes. The statement about geese
was what I remembered most about the album being rather un-vocal myself.

Re: .2 I payed $12.95, but that was at a small store in my near my
parent's house in VA. The guy that runs it sells stereo gear and
only carries CD's to help push his sales of the players. The next
nearest place that carries CD's is two hours away in Norfolk. I picked
up the Allman Bros. double CD of live at Filmore East there for $26.
