| I haven't heard any other recordings of the Nutcracker, but the
Telarc CD is great! We picked it up about a month ago, and thoroughly
enjoy it.

574.2 | Got it at Lechemeres for $14!!! | PARSEC::PESENTI | JP | Thu Dec 18 1986 22:32 | 14 |

I bought the Telarc 2 cd version (CD-80137) at Lechemere's in
Nashua when they had their 20% off Xmas CD sale. At the time,
They had it priced around $17, and I got it on sale for $14!!!
I was amazed at the time, and began to think it was an error
in the flyer when I found all the other Xmas CDs in the rack,
and had to ask for this one...it was retrieved it out of the back
room. They woman that fetched it for me mentioned that she had
just started working there, and was wondering why they had the big
pile in back, and none out front when it was a sale item.

574.3 | Good soundtrack. | COOKIE::ROLLOW | It's kind of fun to be extinct. | Fri Dec 19 1986 12:04 | 11 |
| From what little I've heard of the movie you may not want to
see it. I probably will because I tend not to trust critics
after what they did to "Dune".
My "review" of the soundtrack will be in the batch that I
that I do. I hope to have it finished this weekend. I've
enjoyed it so far and some of the pieces that you don't get
in the Suite, I've liked.

| A 2 CD soundtrack for $14? ...wow! That's a bargain (steal?).
I paid about $25...it was on sale at O'Coin's in Worcester.
At first I had trouble adjusting the volume on my system. For most CD's I set
my volume dial to one spot and they all sound about right. This one sounded
much quieter. I eventually set the volume control higher.
Also, it didn't sound like a typical TELARC recording. I had the feeling
that, if I were listening to a live performance, I'd have been sitting away
from the orchestra. I think most TELARC's sound like up in the front seat. I
have the Nutcracker Suite on TELARC too and the individual instruments sound
like they're much closer.
I don't know if I have these impressions because of the relative quietness of
the recording or not...I'll have to reserve final judgement after I hear it a
few times. If there really is a difference in how this thing was recorded
then maybe it was because of the soundtrack requirements. I really would have
liked this thing to sound like the earlier 'Suite recording though.
There is canon and rifle fire on the CD...there's even a warning about it.
This may be why the whole thing is recorded at what I perceive to be a lower
volume...maybe they don't want to pay people for blown speakers. The rifle
and canon fire isn't as extreme as it is on the '1812 or Battleground Music
CD's. It's subtle enough so that it doesn't overpower the music (you almost
don't notice it). Actually, there are other orchestral sounds that appear to
be louder.
I'm just happy to have the whole thing on CD. I like the shorter suite
version too, but when I'm in the mood for the Nutcracker...I like all of it!

| Even money says that the $17 price was a mistake. I once got a
double-disc of Pink Floyd's THE WALL at Lechmere for $18 when
everyone else was selling it for ~$30. I also once got a video-
tape at half its actual price at a Lechmere, too (it was a
STAR TREK tape, priced the same as all of the other ST tapes
when it should have been twice the price, because it was the
two-part episode on one tape and thus twice the length).
