572.0. "Sony CD-35 quirks ??" by LEELA::MYEE (There's a light that never goes out...) Wed Dec 17 1986 13:46

    I just bought a '86 sony CD-35 player. I think it's a great player
for the money ($179 @ Service Merchandise). It's got more than
enuf features and search time is ~2sec. Love it.

But, there are a couple of quirks (expected for the price).

    1.	There is a ticking sound whenever I play a 'dirty/dusty' disk.
I found out (after opening the unit) what cause this was the
servo laser tracking motor. It was going back and forth tracking
the disk. The ticking noise must have been play in the gears.

    2.	My unit seem very sensitive to vibrations. Whenever I slam
the door near it, it skips.

Does anyone else out there have these problems (either with this
    unit or others) ??

    thanks,

    -mike

572.1CP500 skips when jarred alsoDSSDEV::STRANGEBeing for the benefit of Mr. KiteWed Dec 17 1986 18:327
I have the sensitivity problem on my Sanyo CP500. I have a tape
deck with the old 'piano'-type keys (fully mechanical), and had
it under the CD player, and when the tape would shut itself off,
it would jar the player enough to make it skip. Other than that,
it works great, and it was only $168, had it for 1 yr.

My CDP-35 skips when there's lots of vibration, but it takes a lot
more than just walking by it. I just treat it like I did my old
jumpy turntable although I doubt it's nearly as sensitive. Even
my kids jumping around to 'Sususudio' (sp?) won't make it skip.

I'm very happy with the player- no problems.

The CDP-35 is on sale once again at Service Merchandise for $179.

For those of you that have it, are you still happy with your purchase?
Are there better machines available in this price range?

572.6On Sony model nomenclatureQUARK::LIONELAd AstraMon Dec 12 1988 15:1418
Just a comment - the Sony CDP-nn models, those with two-digits instead of
three, are part of a "cheaper line" to be sold by department and catalog
stores. For instance, the current CDP-nn models (CDP-22, etc.) have
2x oversampling and single D/A converters rather than the 4x and double
converters of the the CDP-nnn models (CDP-570, etc.)

I saw these side by side at Cuomo's in Salem, with the CDP-nn model selling
for the same price as the "equivalent" CDP-nnn model. I asked the salesman
why they even bothered, and he said that Sony required them to buy
a certain number of the CDP-nn models to get the newer CDP-nnn models.
He certainly wasn't encouraging me to buy the lesser unit!

A further note - reply 5 is apparently referring to a European model.
These typically have different model designations, so my comments above
probably don't apply. I would tend to doubt that the CDP-M35 in Europe
is equivalent to the US CDP-35 (which is two years obsolete).
