570.0. "CD vs. record length marketing?" by NATASH::WEIGL (Turboferrets - racing for answers) Sun Dec 14 1986 22:40

Has anyone heard anything or read about the popular music industry
thinking about putting MORE MUSIC on the CD's now that they have
this nice longer-playing format? I've been doing some checking
on discs vs. records (and also watched the "extra tracks" notices
in this file), but it seems that the recording companies haven't
really begun to differentiate between music on records vs. CD's.

I for one am reluctant to buy things that are, say, 35 min total
for the same price as something that's closer to 60 min. This may
mean that my pop collection will remain in vinyl, and classical
migrating to CD since I feel "better" about paying the CD premium
if I'm getting more music out of it.

Any chance that we'll see either 1) better use of the CD format
with longer recordings, or 2) price differentiation based on length?

A few artist are starting to record for CD vs records. The two I
know of off hand are Joe Jackson. His album NEW WORLD is one CD
but takes three album sides. The second is Dire Straits. The Brothers
In Arms record is a remix of the CD.

Some of the Frank Zappa CDs that are coming out have packaged as one CD what
was originally issued as two separate LPs. For example, LUMPY GRAVY and
WE'RE ONLY IN IT FOR THE MONEY were released together on one CD, as were
APOSTROPHE' and OVERNIGHT SENSATION.

Jimmy Buffet seems to be starting that with some of his older albums too.

In some instances, they can get away with it, if the lengths of
the LPs are short enough so that two of them are under 74 minutes.

Motown has released a number of its 60's groups' (Temptations,
Supremes, etc.) albums 2-to-a-disc. And I recently picked up a
single disc with 2 B.B. King albums on it.

Keith Jarrett put out a 60 minute cd of his two-lp Kln concert.
Unfortunately, one of the lp sides got tossed in the transfer.

The Kink's recent two-record retrospective is available on one CD,
*minus* a couple of tracks, for about 1.5 x the cost of a regular,
single CD. I found this annoying.

I recently purchased Paul Winter's "Callings" on CD. As it is
2 LPs on vinyl, when I saw the "extra-length CD" I figured that
they had put all the material on both LPs onto one CD. Apparently
not so - the CD is only 50 minutes! I didn't compare the TOC of
both versions, though, to be sure. I don't consider a 50 minute
    CD to be "extra length"!

For "Extra lenght CD" do not forget "The Boss" Bruce Springsteen
3 CD ,or 5 vinyl! All CD around 71 min each.

Also "Remakes" of Deutsche Gramophon, they Re-mastered good
old Tschaikowsky 1st, 2nd and 3rd symph along with some ballet
music (This one's a jewel), all done by Von Karajan, all these
records with some material adds up to average 65 minutes
each. All are ADD but is great for Tschaikowsky/Von Karajan
lover. Example, the Ballet Music use to be "sleeping beauty"
and the "Swan lake", on CD they have added Nutcraker Suite.

I recently bought a B.B. King CD that has two live albums on
one disc. Definitely over 70 minutes, but I don't recall the
exact figure. BCD has another B.B. King "twofer", but I haven't
    picked it up yet.

Bob Dylan's BIOGRAPH is another example of a 5 LP set put onto 3 CDs at
~70 minutes each.

There has been talk of releasing some of the earlier Beatles albums
2 to a CD. This might make more sense unless they charge double
    for them...

BTW, all of my import CD sources confirm that the first 4 British
albums will be released in England in June.

I just got a Joe Walsh CD that includes the two albums THE SMOKER YOU DRINK
THE PLAYER YOU GET and YOU CAN'T ARGUE WITH A SICK MIND. They are part of
the MCA Records "Two On One" series. The CD runs 72 minutes or so and cost
$14.99. That's about the same price one would pay for the LPs.

CCR's "CHRONICLE" is a single CD from a two album set. I don't remember
what the total length is though.

CCR's "Chronicle" will fit on one 60 minute cassette tape. It's
one of those double albums that was too long for a single album,
like the Beach Boys' "Endless Summer".
