      I haven't seen any yet, but I did see a review of one in Flypaper,
    the Richard Thompson Fan Club newsletter.  Here's what they said
    about it:
    
      "John Martyn - Classic John Martyn - Angeline (Island Records,
    CID-265)
    
    	Billed as the first c.d. single, at c.d. prices this one's a
    rip-off. clocking in at 24:40.  There are five songs, four taken
    from the Piece By Piece c.d. (three of the four are from the extra
    non-l.p. tracks), and the fifth is the fairly uninteresting
    instrumental (another oldie) "Glistening Glyndebourne."  Stick to
    the c.d. of the l.p."
    
    
    ....That doesn't sound too promising...

    As I've mentioned before, there's a CD "single" of Suzanne Vega
    which has 3 tracks (for a total of about 10 minutes), two from
    her album plus the song "Left of Center" from the PREETY IN PINK
    soundtrack. I bought a copy for $10 (a buck a minute!), but only
    for totally irrational collectors' reasons.

    If CD singles can be manufactured and sold for $5, that kinda shoots a
    big hole in any claim that current CD prices reflect an expensive
    manufacturing process.

    But we already know that.  The current prices are "what the traffic
    will bear."

     "Rage Heart" by "Frankie goes to Hollywood"
for the unbelieveable price of nearly a normal CD == 
	26 DM (Deutsch Marks) or about  $13
and this all for some 20 Minutes of Music (3 songs, never found
somewhere before) !!!!
The first is a maxi version of "Rage Heart" = about 13 Minutes, different
from any version I've heard before !
The other 2 songs are not what I expected from FGTH !!

    I think the CD's origin is england ! Probably it's only for collectors

    Are there any examples of CD singles in the U.S.A. ?  
    I've never really hunted for them, but I've never noticed them in
    a record store either.  

    I've seen a Harry Chapin one:
    
    	Remember When The Music / I Miss America
    
    Don't remember the price, but it comes with it's own adapter.

    I have the Harry Chapin one. Paid $5.99 for it mainly as a novelty;
    it should have been maybe $3.99. 
    
    Ray Charles also has one....America the Beautiful, I think. It's
    about 3 minutes long.

    Delos had about a dozen out now, mostly between 16 and 18 minutes
    long, and all classical.

        I believe I've seen a couple each of jazz and pop Delos minis
        as well. Nothing I was interested in so I don't remember what.

    Three new three inchers now available:
    
    2 new Zappas on Ryko, one is "Zomby Woof" from the "You Can't Do
    That.." album, the other is from the album "Guitar", I forget the
    song titles.  Two tracks on each, about ten minutes of music.
    
    This is a promo you can only order by mail:
    
    Ensoniq, the synthesizer maker has recorded a DDD single of the
    (temporarily reformed) Dregs.  Two tracks plus a band interview,
    which most likely touts the latest Ensoniq gear.  Dregs fans pick
    up the latest issue of Musician magazine for an order form.  

    
    So now that CD3s have been around awhile, what's the consensus of
    noters as to their worth?
    
    I've bought four so far and they've been worth it; I bought the
    Zappa "Peaches" out of curiosity, and it was worth the $3.  I snaged
    a Robyn Hitchcock with two non-Lp tracks to see if I would like
    to buy the whole album (answer was "probably not").  I got the Dregs
    "Off the Top" promo disk as it was only $5 and I always liked the
    Dregs.  
    
    The one that was really worth it is the Springsteen "Chimes of Freedom"
    although I've gotta say I'm ticked at CBS over the packaging (or
    more to the point, the *lack* of it).

    Since then, I haven't seen any that seemed worth the price.  The
    Rhino "Little Bit of Gold" series has caught my eye but I haven't
    bitten yet.
    
    Has anyone gone for these in a big way yet?

    
    I have a few of the Rhino oldies at home.
    Last night I noticed that Capital put out Beatles on the 3" format.
    The CD's only had 2 songs each and they are charging FULL PRICE!
    $4.99 for each CD.
    There was nothing special about them either, ie: no unreleased songs.

I have bitten on the Rhino series.  They're pretty good.
Four songs for $4.01.

	I have five of the RHINO "Little Bit Of Gold" CD singles.
	They are great. The sound quality is right up there with
	the rest of what RHINO puts out.  The nice thing about
	these single CDs is the fact that you don't have to buy
	a full length CD of a group that only had a few hits.

        I'm seriously considering getting the "She was a Hotel Detective"
    3"er by They Might Be Giants.  The version of "Kiss Me Son of God"
    on that is far superior, IMO, to the one on "Lincoln".

    CD INTERNATIONAL mentioned that Toshiba in Japan was releasing
    Beatles CD3's. If the Capital ones are the same as Toshiba's,
    then they *are* special (at least some of them are), as they
    as using the singles' masters for them. For many of the singles,
    the mixes are different than the album mixes.

    I've only bought four CD singles so far: Suzanne Vega, Les Paul &
    Mary Ford, Jennifer Warnes, and Ryuichi Sakamoto & David Sylvian.
    The Warnes is the only one that I've really felt was "worth it"
    above and beyond simple collectors' interest, as in addition to
    one track from FAMOUS BLUE RAINCOAT, it included two movie sound-
    track songs that I otherwise would not have (i.e. I'd never have
    bought the soundtrack albums just for these songs). The Vega was
    a reasonable, as it included (in addition to "Luka") two live tracks.
    The Les Paul & Mary Ford did not have any of their best material,
    and was worth it only because it's the only stuff of theirs on CD
    (there is supposedly a full-sized CD of them from CBS, but I've yet
    to find it). The Sakamoto & Sylvian was interesting, but I'm not
    sure that I really consider it "worth it".
    
    Brian seems to be including the 5" singles as well (I tend to differ-
    entiate between the two by referring to the 3"'ers as "singles" and
    the 5"'ers as "EPs"). I've bought a few of those: the Dregs, two
    Pogues', and three Suzanne Vega's. The Dregs, the Pogues, and one
    of the Vega's  had some otherwise non-available tracks. The other
    two Vega's I bought purely out of collector's "completist mania"
    (though one of them had her track from the PRETTY IN PINK soundtrack,
    which I wouldn't have bought on CD just for that track).
    
    To my mind, they represent the same market as that of the vinyl 12"
    singles. They're a good source for alternate mixes, live tracks,
    and that sort of thing. For collectors, they have some value in
    this regard. Otherwise, I don't really see what purpose they serve.

    I'd like to echo what .21 said about the Beatles 2-song CD3's.
    If they're the single mixes, I'll go for at least a couple of them.
    "Ticket to Ride", for one -- the mono version is superior to the
    stereo remake.  Ditto for "Help!".  Plus mono mixes of songs that
    I feel didn't come out quite right on "Past Masters Vol.1" (hope
    I got that title correct) -- like "Slow Down".
    
    Of course, I'm also one of those guys who made a point of purchasing
    the mono versions of all the Beatles LPs up through "Magical Mystery
    Tour" -- although the real point was to get mono versions of the cuts
    originally mixed and approved by the artists for mono (the earlier
    LPs).
    
    Anyway, to get back to the point, for the cuts rerecorded on separate
    occasions for stereo, like "Ticket to Ride" and "Help", I would be glad
    to see both versions available on CD.
    
    For that matter, as I think everyone agrees by now, the first 7
    British sets, from "Please Please Me" through "Revolver", ought
    to be available in both mono and stereo -- the way the Parlophone
    LPs have always been (and have enjoyed steady sales in both formats
    through the years, I understand).

    The Beach Boys vol. 1
    Fats Domino
    The Classics IV
    
    I bought them because they had songs I liked by these artists, but
    I didn't want to buy a whole CD to get them.  Now if Rhino comes
    out with one by the Dave Clark Five, I'll be all set.

Don't forget they also made a mono version of the White Album, only in
the U.K.  Probably the most different of all the mono mixes.
Parlophone made a small (~5000 copies) repressing of it in 1981.

      I like 'em myself.  I have four of the Rhino little bit 'o gold
    but I don't seem to have much luck with Rhino as other's in this
    file.  Usually it's with noise drowning out the music but in one
    particular case of the 3", I don't know if I have a defective CD
    or if Rhino screwed them all up.  The problem is with the intro
    to Surf City on the Jan & Dean cd.  The first x tenths of the song
    are missing so instead of "two girls for every boy" it's "ooh girls
    for every boy".  Does anyone else have this CD and if so, do you
    have the problem.  I am very pleased with the sound quality of this
    particular cd but this 'defect' really detracts from it.

    re .25  Sounds to me (pun intended, heh-heh) like you may need to
    clean the disc off or exchange it. The laser is skipping over the
    beginning. Look closely under a bright light moving the disc from
    side to side to ensure no dust/dirt/pizza, etc. If none shows up,
    then exchange it. My 3" Jan & Dean is fine. As far as the noise
    goes, it's definitly tape hiss - but c'mon...it ain't that bad !

       It shouldn't have dust/dirt/pizza because it was like this from
    the start...but I will check it.  I'm not complaining about the 
    noise on this one. I consider this to have about the least noise 
    of my Rhino CD's. Thanks for letting me know it's just this cd and
    not the batch of 'em.

    I bought one, Meatloaf "2 out of 3 ain't bad/Paradise by the dashboard
    light".  Didn't think it was worth buying the whole album when those
    were the main songs I was looking for.  I have the tape already.
    I liked it.  A pain to store, but worth the $3.00 or so I paid for
    it.
