547.0. "The Pacific Age" by PNEUMA::WILSON () Mon Dec 01 1986 12:49

Anyone out there buy the new Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark CD,
    "The Pacific Age"?

I've listened to it twice; the first time through it was hard to
listen to (like all new music), but the second time was much better.

    Excellent recording (DDD)...

How long has this band been around? Did they have any hits?

    Any comments, gripes?

I wanted to mention also that I like the song "Southern"...sort
of reminds me of Pink Floyd's technique of inserting voices
in songs (OMD uses Martin Luther King's speeches). In Floyd, though,
the voices are usually (intentionally) obscured by music.

In "Southern," OMD's upbeat instrumental fits King's powerful,
    stirring speeches so well...

"Forever Live And Die" made the British top 5 (Rock over London)
about a month ago. WFNX gave it a fair amount of air time too.
And yes, the DDD sounds really good.

This is the band's third album, I believe they've been around 3-4
years. I've heard some of their material played on the radio, but
not over the period of time that hits tend to be played.

The other albums that they've put out (I have both on vinyl):
Architecure and Morality - released 2 years ago (?)
Crush	(also available on CD) - released last year

Though this disk plays fine on my Magnovox 1040, I've noticed that
my Technics portable has trouble with some of the tracks. It may
just need cleaning, as I found that after doing some cleaning that
it made it through a track it couldn't before.

O.M.D. have at least seven albums out, all available on CD:

1980:	O.M.D.
1980:	Organisation
1981:	Architecture and Morality
1983:	Dazzle Ships
1984:	Junk Culture
1985:	Crush
1986:	The Pacific Age

I have all but the first (which I will buy as soon as I can find it at a
reasonable price). I also went to their concert at the Orpheum two weeks
ago. Their lead singer, Andy McCluskey, is a very high-energy performer.

"So in Love" and "Secret" (on Crush) got a reasonable amount of airplay last
year. "Tesla Girls" (on Junk Culture) and "Enola Gay" (on Organisation) are
among their better known songs. "La Femme Accident" is out in an extended
mix LP single. Medium mix is on Crush. "If You Leave" from "Pretty in Pink"
made the charts and got a lot of airplay a few months ago. Not on any of
their albums.
