Now, I've seen at least three versions of Time Out by The Dave Brubeck Quartet. One was a mislabled disc. The spine label said "Take Five" rather than "Time Out". I think someone out there has purchased it, and might be able to talk about where it came from. The second was a Columbia disc (Columbia = CBS). This has been available for a while around these parts for ~$16.00. The third I noticed at Tower Records this weekend. It was a CBS disc, something about "historical re-issue" or some such screened on the disc, and asking price was $24.00! Ok, are any of these bootlegs? What's the story with this mega-buck disc? (I asked the salesperson why the high price on Time Out, and he lamely talked about the price of the Yen and it's Reagan's fault that Time Out costs $24.00. I bought two made in Japan discs at the time, both under $15.00. I don't think it registered with the "help" that he was spewing forth caca.) Sooooo. What's the story? Anybody know? Mis-tagged discs at Tower (They had a couple of dozen, all marked the same outrageous price.) -mr. bill

Your first two versions are the same disc. I have it, it's a Columbia issue, and it's mislabeled TAKE FIVE on the spine (I have yet to see one that isn't so mislabeled). It cost me in the $14-16 range from Lechmere. I haven't seen the other one you describe, but I would guess that it is indeed a Japanese import, and was probably issued before the US version was. As far as the price on imports go, there is a difference between a disc that is simply made in Japan for a US label for distribution in the US (few CD's are actually manufactured in this country) and one that is made by a Japanese label (or the Japanese branch of a US label) for distribution in Japan and then imported to the US. I'm not surprised at the $24.00 price tag. It'll possibly sound better than the American issue, but the latter is so good, that the difference in price is far greater than the difference in quality. And remember, it's the distributor that sets the price, not the retailer (except in how he adjusts it to make his profit). BCD has some German imports for $18.99 and some for $23.99. The retailer can only adjust up from what *he* has to pay to the distributor. --- jerry |
