545.0. "sony cdp-50" by NEXUS::GORTMAKER () Wed Nov 26 1986 01:36

    I just got into this conference today for the first time
    so if this has been covered before sorry.

    I looking for opinions of sony's cdp50 is there anyone out there
    that owns one besides me?
    If so what are your opinions?
    I dont have a "golden ear" but really like what I hear.
    I have also seen references to modifications being done to magnavox
    players but nothing for sony. Do any exist?

    thanx, jerry

545.2For God's sake don't drop it!!!!ERIC::LARSThu Apr 23 1987 08:0818
    Is this the portable version available in UK with slide in power
    supply? If so I have one. I'm very happy with the reproduction but
    had a bad experience of Sony service when it needed repair. My son
    dropped it (about 1 foot on to a carpet!) and the laser went out.I
    took it to the Sony service centre in Leeds who charged me 144 poundsto
    fit a new optical unit(?).When I tried it out it would skip tracks
    or stop every time the cat walked past!Back to Sony whose response
    was "That's the best you can expect considering the unit was dropped:
    the chassis is probably microscopically distorted causing the laser
    to track badly. Needless to say this did not satisfy me and after a
    long and sometimes heated phone call to Sony customer relations
    dept. in London they agreed to replace the unit free of any further
    charges.This whole saga took 6 MONTHS!!! This implies to me that
    Sony aren't capable of repairing these players quickly or reliably,
    if at all. Good listening.
