539.0. " Technics cd players" by GUMDRP::PIERMARINI () Thu Nov 20 1986 12:18

Has anyone purchased the new technics SL-PJ11 cd player out
there? I would like to hear some comments about it or technics in
general. I was concerned that there new units only have one beam, but
then again I'm not sure what the benifit of haveing a three beam
unit would be? And what about the sampling rate it is 44.1khz.
is this low or are most players like this?
Thanks for any input on this matter.

539.1Don't have one, but...DSSDEV::STRANGEBeing for the benefit of Mr. KiteThu Nov 20 1986 14:0912
Any player that doesn't do oversampling samples at 44.1khz, certainly
there are *none* that sample at a lower frequency than this. 44.1khz
is the established digital sampling rate for CD's, 44,100 words
per second per channel. (16 bits/word). Apparently some players
have D/A converters that are only capable of reading 14 bits/word,
but there are 16/word on the disc.
The three-beam players, from my understanding, have one beam that
is split into three with lenses. The idea is to minimize reading
errors, and thus minimize the amount of interpolation the player
    must do.

When CD players first appeared on the market, they had 1 beam
and mistracked _a lot_. Breaking the beam up into 3 beams fixed
this problem in the next generation. The newest generation, now
has better servos, damping, isolation etc. and no longer needs 3
beam tracking to perform well...

re .0

I have a Technics (SL-PJ91) that I got a year ago. No problems at all and
I think the sound and functionality is great. The only thing it is missing
is a remote. Beware though, most folks in these _'phile Notesfiles wouldn't
consider Technics _top-end_.

Good luck and try it out first if possible.
