538.0. "CD Releases" by LA780::GOLDSMITH (Reserved for Future Use.) Wed Nov 19 1986 12:20

Being that I live in California might give me a tainted view on this
issue, but I'm curious as to how quickly CDs are being released in the
    rest of the country.

I have had the following experience:

A&M: CDs for new releases follow album by 4-6 Weeks.
            Old releases slow in coming.

CBS: CDs for new releases follow in under 4 weeks,
            sometimes release same day.
Many, many old releases coming out.

WEA: (Warner, Elektra, Asylum, Geffin, kitchen sink...)
CDs for new releases come any where for 6 to 12 weeks
            after release.
Old releases are very dependent on the artist in question.

    EMI: (Capitol, EMI America)
CDs for new releases come out/or don't
depending on how well the album sells. Old releases, well.... I hold
comment until the Beatles show up.

I am a fan of modern music, so my comments on releases don't cover
Classical music. I do listen to/and buy classical and jazz, but
    I don't await new releases.

I would be interested to see comments on the experience of others
in getting CDs of new releases.

I'm from NY and I find very similar time lapses between the LP and CD.
The only good thing is that most of the smaller stores are well
connected and can give me an accurate date for release. (ie: I
was told that the new Fogerty would come out last week and sure
enough that was when it hit the stores). Another good thing is that
for new releases I don't have the difficulty of finding ony one
or two copies...for most when they hit the stores they
hit in bulk. Do you find a great many jap imports out west? I
can get them by request but you don't often find them out on the
shelves. Do you have any stores that supply mail order info on
    imports?

I can get some Japanese imports mainly at Tower Records, however
I can get a great selection of European imports at CD Warehouse.
They advertise in Digital Audio but if any one needs the address
    I will post it here.
