| Another blues disc I saw today, though I haven't picked it up
yet, is HOT TUNA LIVE! It's on the Relix label. There's also
a Jorma Kaunkonen disc on the same label.

| I bought a Best of Albert King CD last weekend. It's a very
good collection of some of his best Stax recordings.... I found
it at Strawberrys in Framingham, MA, but it was the only copy there.

| I bought one of the BB King double album/1 disk. BEST OF ELECTRIC
& JAZZ was one album and the other has slipped through my cracks.
Its very nice to hear some blues on CD, and although the sound quality
doesn't get a rave (AAD), I'm quite happy that it sounds better
than any of BB's albums that I own and I got two for approx. the
same price as it would cost to buy vinal. 71+ minutes makes it
quite a good buy as well.
As for the performance, I always prefer a more bluesy style and
BB is not consistent in complying. As his material has changed
as popularity and age settles in, he has responded with less
gut-wrenching, but probably more even works. This material fits
in the middle with some bluer, some more soulful and some Idon't
pay much attention to.
Thanks for the info Jerry. My copy of SUPERSESSION has needed
replacing for years. Its interesting that as many blues titles
that seem to be popping up on CD these days, its more than you can
find in vinal in the average record store.

The only other blues CDs I've bought so far are Albert Collins
Ice Pickin, and the Rounder collection Out of the Blue. I like
both of them, and recommend them both. I liked the collection
particularly because it has a lot of people I wouldn't have bought
without hearing them first...
...If you count Derek & the Dominos - Layla and other Assorted
Love Songs as blues, I have that too... performance - great, sound
on CD - poor. (I have the import, so I don't know if the American
version is any better).

| Stevie Ray Vaughan's LIVE ALIVE is finally on CD. The good news
is that it's a double album on one CD, just a tad over 70 minutes.
The bad news, kinda sorta, is that it really isn't that thrilling
an album. SRV can do some fantastic work in concert, but I found
most of the cuts on LIVE ALIVE to be rather lifeless. And he seems
to have opted for sticking on the tunes that people are most
familiar with, like "Pride and Joy", "Cold Shot", and "Voodoo
Chile". I think he'd been better off using some of his killer
live material like "Testify", "Rude Mood", and "Tin Pan Alley",
not to mention (OK, I'll mention it) his *terrific* cover of
Hendrix's "Third Stone from the Sun".

Two I have purchased recently,
Robert Cray "Strong Persuader"
Stevie Ray Vaughan "Can't Stand the Weather"
I like both quite a bit.
Good source for Blues material: WICN-FM in Worcester,MA has
a blues show on Fridays starting (I believe) at 5pm. Located
at 91.3 on the dial, I have heard many selections I like though
they do not specify whether they're on CD or not. Also WGBH
in Boston (89.7, FM) has a show at midnight Saturdays. They
are definately CD capable and usually tell you whats what.

Anyways, it's a real joy listening to that one on CD. The really
quiet measures of Stevie Ray's intro to "Tin Pan Alley" are
crystal clear.

| A German import of Canned Heat. Haven't had a chance to listen
yet, and there's no documentation that says whether this is
recent or a classic compilation or what, but it's got some good
tunes such as "Bull Frog Blues", "Dust My Broom", and "I Wish
You Would". Actually, if that last is what I think it is (the
old Yardbird's tune), then this might be something recent, since
I don't recall that Canned Heat ever recorded this song.

| Just found a Howlin' Wolf "Two On One" CD containing his first
two Chess LPs ("Moanin In The Moonlight" and "Howlin' Wolf" aka
the rocking chair album). Liner notes claim they omitted one song
to make them fit but the LPs don't have any extra cuts so I think
it's a misprint. If you like the Wolf you need this disc!

MCA has also released Muddy Waters and B. B. King on this format.
I've got the Muddy Waters and Howling Wolf CD's. They're on sale
this week at Lechmere's for 11.98, so grab 'em. The Muddy Waters
albums are Muddy Waters sings Big Bill Broonzy and Folk Singer,
real good acoustic stuff. Would anybody care to recommend a John
Lee Hooker compilation CD (preferably 60+ minutes)?

Has anybody picked up the Japanese Muddy Waters "Chess Years"
compilations?
One is from 1949-1951, the other 1951-1959 (if I remember correctly).
I am most curious in how good the sound is as they are pretty
expensive.
Also, how about the CBS stuff? I have seen "Hard Again" as a budget
CD....are "I'm Ready", "King Bee" and "Muddy Mississippi Waters
Live" out as well?

MUDDY WATERS: THE "CHESS YEARS" are good disks. The sound quality
isn't perfect, but you have to consider the recordings. I think
they are worth getting.
I don't think they are Japanese imports, though, but French. I'd
have to check, but I believe they are put out by Vogue.

| I just picked up a Bessie Smith CD and I'm quite pleased with
it. The singing is great and the recording is pretty good. The
CD was remastered from her original 78's for a show on the BBC as
part of a radio series 'Jazz Classics in Stereo'.
Bessie Smith was 'The Empress of the Blues' during her singing
career of 1925-1934. She has a powerful blues voice that is really
packed with emotion. I grew up listining to my dad scratchy 78
of the blues and find this CD recordings less noisy and easier to
listen to. If you like old time Blues give this disk a listen.

| Treat Her Right, a Boston band, has released their self-titled cd
on RCA. Nice disc. ``I Think She Likes Me'' is one of the neatest
tunes I've heard. The disc contains all original material.

| Rounder has finally released a twofer CD of Duke Robillard's
first two albums. The good news is that it sounds wonderful.
The bad news is that this twofer follows in the same tradition
of previous Rounder combo-CD's in that in order to keep (1)
within the 74-minute limit, and (2) down to a single CD, they
left off 3 out of the 20 tracks from the two LP's. Not a big
deal, but as I'm a completist, this irks me. Now I can't sell
off my LP's. Actually, the big gripe is that they would've
stayed within the 74-minute boundry by leaving off only *one*
track rather than all three. *sigh*

I picked up ROCKIN' BLUES during lunch today at Rockit Records in
Nashua, NH. Got the last one!
Don't know why they left off three songs. The CD is only 67 minutes
long. They could of squeezed in a couple more songs with the remaining
7 minutes.

This evening I found both East-West and the self-titled first album
from the Paul Butterfield Blues Band. The disks were at Good Vibrations
in Worcester. The sound is clear and good and the music is ever so
fine. Twenty years ago I bought my copies of the lps and drove 'em into
the ground.

Black Top, a New Orleans based label distributed by Rounder, has
started to issue some CDs. Among the more notable:
Ronnie Earl "Deep Blues" This is a compilation from his LPs "Smoking"
and "They Call Me Mr. Earl". The BT catalog says "over 60 minutes
of music", but doesn't specify any dropped tracks.
Buckwheat Zydeco "100% Fortified Zydeco" His last album before
going on to Island records
Black Top Sampler This is billed as "the world's first all-blues
CD single"
