520.0. "SPEAKER HELP" by KIM::BARKER (I HAVE 2 KIDS....TGIM) Tue Nov 04 1986 00:35

    Hi...

    Currently I have the CARVER receiver, SL-PJ11 CD player, SONY tape
    deck, and some SAD examples of speakers. I'm interested in replacing
    those speakers with something of a higher quality ($300-$400 each
    price range). Anyone have any ideas on what kind to start looking
    with?

    thanx

    The AUDIO Notes file on DSSDEV has many discussions on speakers
    that might provide the information you are looking for.
520.2check Celestion seriesJAKE::ROBERTSONCan't hear it? Are you Blind?Tue Nov 04 1986 11:0612
    Check out the Celestion DL10 and SL6's. The DL series has a nice
    sound plus it has decent imaging plus an extended low end.($800)

    The SL6 is a real nice piece and small too. The imaging is
    unbelievable and the sound is smooth and neutral. The main problem
    with these is they roll off on the low end at around 60-80 Hz and
    they don't have the best sensitivity, but with the Carver you'd
    never notice. ($800 also)

    I have a pair of DL10's and I love 'em. Got them at the Listening
    Shop in Marlboro, MA.

520.3Try KLIPSH - they're awesomeWHICH::TSAITue Nov 04 1986 12:2311

    I would recommend the KLIPSH HERESY loudspeakers. They run about
    $700-$800 and are incredible. The cabinets are all handcrafted
    wood, and the response is awesome. I own a pair myself, and I
    have a Yamaha CD player and Amplifier. The speakers are very
    efficient at low volume, and when you really crank it up, they
    are tremendous. My amp can crank out 150+ watts and the KLIPSH
    speakers can handle it and more.

    Try out a pair and listen for yourself.

    I faced that problem almost a year ago, and I still have not bought
    any new speakers :-(.

    Anyway, check out note #317 on DSSDEV::Audio.note

    Good luck,

520.5Boston Acoustics are coolNISYSE::GREENIDGEWed Nov 05 1986 12:465
    You can pick up a pair of Boston Acoustics A100's for that price.
    Also, check out the Mission line of speakers, they are excellent.
    For the money, however, I think BA's are your best bet.

I think .0 was willing to spend twice that price. (A100s list at $390/pair)

The A150s or A400s are at the opposite edges of your price range. I thought
I wanted to spend that much, but got talked up to a pair of JSE Model 1s at
about $1000.  They're great.

BA is a good company though; they fixed my (almost) five year old A100s by
replacing all components; now I have two good pairs of speakers.

520.7I love my Bose 501 Series IVSTAR::JACOBIFri Nov 07 1986 16:418
    I just got a pair of Bose 501 Series IV from Lechmere at $299 each.
    They are not very efficient, but they do sound GREAT in my small
    apartment. I power them with a new 120 watt JVC 9V receiver and a
    Technics SLP-500 CD player. The Bose's unique design really spreads
    out the sound. I love 'em.

520.8Don't buy brands to impress your friendsNEXUS::FURLONGFri Nov 07 1986 17:264
    I was real impressed with Linn 325's (not sure about the number)
    that I heard at a high end hi-fi shop in Co. Springs. They were
    between $300-350. I was with a person who has the Klipsch Heresy's
    and she was impressed with the sound, also.
520.9you can keep the 100'sBARAKA::FELDMANAre we having fun yet?Fri Nov 07 1986 17:505
    I'd stay away from the BA100's. The 40's and 60's are much cleaner
    sounding. I couldn't tell if it was an enclosure or crossover problem,
    but if you A/B them you'll notice it at once.

    Re: .7
    Yep, I've had my 501 series IV since 1975, and they still provide
    good sound, but I added Yamaha monitors on top to compensate for
    the high end lacking 501's. I bought 'em in 1975 for the same price.
    (Of course i was doing the comercial's for the store on the air
    back then, so I did get $100.00 off, back at WRQR)

520.11QUARK::LIONELReality is frequently inaccurateMon Nov 10 1986 10:0326
    I just went through this exercise this weekend. I compared the
    BA A100, some ADS, Polk 10, OHM Walsh, Snell Type E and the new
    dbx 100 "Soundfield" speaker. I bought the dbx. My second choice
    would have been the BA, and the BAs are certainly a bargain, but
    the physical size of the speakers didn't quite match my needs.
    The dbx fit my room, provide a good stereo image over a wide listening
    area, and sound very good. I paid $759 for the pair. They're
    also quite good looking.

    Speakers are a matter of personal preference, like editors and
    operating systems. If everyone agreed on what makes a "best" speaker,
    all speakers would sound alike.

    Find two or three of your favorite CD tracks that exemplify the
    kind of music you like to listen to - tracks that are demanding
    on the speakers - and bring the CDs with you when you go shopping.
    Hearing the same music on all the speakers you try - music you are
    already familiar with - will help you eliminate distractions.

    One thing I discovered - many of the good speakers on the market
    have nominal 4 ohm impedances, and some amps (like those in the
    Sony ST-AV8x0 series of receivers, for example) have a hard time
    driving them. Be sure your amp can handle the speakers you buy
    (though with the Carver, you should have nothing to worry about.)

    There's a perfectly good conference at DSSDEV::AUDIO for discussion
    of speakers and other non-CD peripherals. Why are we continuing
    this here?
