509.0. "Recommendations for Bach's Well-Tempered Klavier" by PRAGMA::GRIFFIN (Dave Griffin) Sun Oct 26 1986 18:06

I recently decided that I liked what exerpts of Bach's "The
Well-tempered Klavier" I have heard over the years so much that I
would go out and pick up both books - knowing full well that it
would be more than 1 CD...

I finally found it at Electric Grammaphone - $64 .. Ugh!

Can any of the classical music specialists recommend a particular
artist or recording before I purchase the CD - 'cause I'm only
going to buy one version.. :-)

    Thanks,

    - dave

Well, I don't know your tastes, but here are 3 reccommended performers

    1. Trevor Pinnock ('authentic Baroque')
    2. Ton Koopman ( ditto )
    3. Glenn Gould ('authentic Gould, definitely NOT Baroque -- uses
    			a piano')

Oh -- I don't really know if these folks have the complete WTC
available on CD -- but they are good!

Don't forget Sviatislov Richter; piano. Russian and exciting and
even romantic performances. Had it on records and perhaps will
    be avail on CD.

The Glenn Gould recordings are available on a two CD set. You can also
find the Goldberg Variations (1 cd) and the French and English Suites
(2 cd's and 3 cd's per set). There is also a reissue of the first Gould
recording of the Goldberg Variations.

For completists, BIS records has issued a Gould recording from a
Scandinavian tour. Available at Tower in Boston.

Note that some of the Gould piano recordings include his off-key humming.

The April '87 issue of HiFi News & Record Review makes the CD of
Das Wohltemperierte Clavier 1&2 by Kenneth Gilbert its 'Record of
    the Month'. (ARCHIV 413 439-2) 4-CD's, 255m 51s

Reviewier Roger Bowen writes that it is one of the most immediate
and sonically arresting harpsichord CD's he has heard and gives
it their highest rating for both performance and recording.
