507.0. "Peter Gabriel CD's?????" by CAD::GLEBERMAN () Wed Oct 22 1986 12:52

    Does anybody know where I can find Peter Gabriel:Peter Gabriel?
    In fact, I'm looking for any Gabriel CD (except So and Security,
    both of which I own already). Supposedly, Birdy,Peter Gabriel
    (the title also),and Plays Live are all on CD but I've never
    seen them.

    Any help would be great. Thanks!

    I've seen "Birdy" in the soundtrack section of a big Soundwarehouse
    in Dallas and maybe here in Colorado Springs. If you can't find
    it in the rock section under Peter Gabriel, look in soundtracks.

    I've seen the other either in a catalog or in the Digital Audio
    "new releases" list. I've never seen one in a store.

507.2 Gabriel CD'S .....USHS01::PARRACOWed Oct 29 1986 15:4917

    Pete is a particular favorite of mine and I have the following :

    All Genesis featuring Gabriel :	Nursery Cryme , Foxtrot, Trespass,
    					Selling England by the Pound,
    					Lamb lies down on Broadway ......

    in addition to So and Security, I have Birdy and Plays Live, which
    is not the complete Live LP on CD, but a "best of", around 65
    minutes...

    I found Plays Live in Boston, near B.U. on Newton Street (off
    Commonwealth) and Birdy is always in the Soundtrack section, call
    around to see who sells/orders imports ......

    I've never seen P.G. I, II, or III (as they're called in the UK)
    in any catalogs or stores, if you see them, LET ME KNOW !!!!!!!!!

    	Could you give an overview of the earlier Genesis CD's you have.
    I have Trick of the Tail and Second's Out (both post Gabriel
    productions). Although I'm familiar with some of the music off
    the CD's you mentionned, I'm curious about the recordings. (i.e.
    How's the master?) Are any of these REQUIRED purchases for
    Gabriel/Genesis fans!

    Birdy and Plays Live were both on sale here in the UK when I looked
    at lunchtime. Paeter Gabriel 4 (the last studio one before So) is
    also available.

507.5The "real" Genesis.COOKIE::ROLLOWRedneck cookin'... Fryit!Fri Oct 31 1986 10:5514
    re: .3

    One Genesis fan I know doesn't consider post-Gabriel to be "real"
    Genesis. Gabriel based Genesis and Collins based Genesis sound
    very different. It is entirely possible that you might not like
    both.

    "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" is probably the best of both
    worlds. If you can find it I recommended musicallly. I haven't
    heard the CD, but the early Genesis I have sounds good ("Trespass"
    and "Nursery Cryme").

    For the true Gabriel afficionado .......

    Genesis - as an entity, has gone thru major contortions and upheaval.
    	      Peter was the driving force behind the creation of the
    	      band. The albums he appears on are definitive as far as
    	      tracing his musical growth. Unfortunately, the masters
	      are not up to the standards of today's Genesis recordings.

    	      However, "Selling England by the Pound" sounds quite
	      respectable, as does "The Lamb lies Down on Broadway".
    	      These 2 are, for me, Pete at his best, and are unmistakably
    	      "Gabriel". In fact, "the Lamb" was the primary cause of
    	      his leaving Genesis, the other band members being disgruntled
    	      by his "total control" of the album's production .......

    	      I also have the 1972 Genesis "LIVE" album on CD, which
    	      is fairly a crude recording, but a unique insight to the
    	      band who defined modern progressive rock.

    	      I will mention Yes / King Crimson , etc.................
    	      who are also on my Top 10 list .........................

    	Not being a P.G. Fan, i don't know all his album but yesterday
    	I saw the one where he(?) look like to be in a racing car
    	(blue offset). Rather expensive (it was 29 or 35 $ Can i.e.:
    	20 or 25 US$ + 9% sale tax)... Is it what you are looking for?
    	  If you absolutely want it, you can always communicate with

507.16Is SO DDDHPSCAD::FENNELLTue Jan 13 1987 08:507
Is SO DDD? I looked all over the disk and the box for any clues but found
none. I saw SECURITY at Strawberries and it mentioned on the back of the
box that the disk was digitally recorded, so I figured SO would be as well.
Listening to the disk, it sounds like it is ADD. Can anyone shed some
light on this?

507.17I believe SO...MIGHTY::MICHAUDTue Jan 13 1987 08:588
    re. .16
    I wondered the same thing when I purchased this CD. I don't know
    exactly where I saw that it was DDD, but I think it was in the little
    lyric book that comes with the CD. I agree with you when you say
    that it sounds like ADD however. There is a very tinny sound in
    his voice... It's got to make you wonder!....

507.18Probably ADD.COOKIE::ROLLOWIt's kind of fun to be extinct.Tue Jan 13 1987 11:064
    I think an article in "Digital Audio and Compact Disc Review"
    said he went with ADD because it gave the sound he wanted in
    the bass. I wouldn't be surprised to see a mix of analog and
    digital on the same track someday.
507.19"So" sound qualityTLE::WARDTue Jan 13 1987 13:4615
Yes, I read the same article in Digital Audio. In it, Pete made clear
that "So" is an analog recording. I have a question about the sound
quality of this disc:

     Does anyone notice that there is more bass on this disc than
     on most others in his/her collection? I'm not sure whether it's
     the disc I have (the British import -- Virgin, I think), my
     system or my ears. The highs are all there, though -- actually
     there's a bit more high end there than on most discs in my
     collection, too. (I can adjust my highs and lows, but it's a
     real pain when most discs follow a certain consistency --
     especially with regard to the high end.) I wonder whether this
     problem is caused by the disc's analog origins . . .

507.20Selling Gabriel by the PoundUSHS01::PARRACOWed Jan 21 1987 11:3521

    	What is the world coming to ?? !!!

    	First, "So" hits the charts "Big Time" and then Pete gets on
    	the cover of Rolling Stone, and finally he gets hisself
    	nominated for some major "pop" Grammys.

    	Is this the same old Pete who used to wear Bat Wings and put
    	on the "Slipperman" head ??????

    	Glad he's achieved some financial success, but hope he does
    	not inherit the Genesis "gone-pop syndrome" !!!!!

    	PS - So is definitely AAD .......he wanted the midrange to be
    	     "deafening: ..

    	     The concert in Houston was EXCELLENT , not long enough
    	     tho' , but they never are ..........
