482.0. ""Ocean Rain" Review" by PNEUMA::WILSON () Thu Oct 02 1986 09:09

A few weeks ago I bought the "Ocean Rain" CD by Echo & the Bunnymen.
I've held off reviewing it because I have the cassette and Iwanted
to see whether the difference between the two was significant enough
to merit my spending the extra ten bucks for the CD.

This is a great record and I still enjoy it a lot after nine months
of listening to it at least once a week. There are enough quiet
passages in this recording to warrant the CD purchase. And Idetect
no hiss at all in the quiet passage at the beginning of the last
cut, "Ocean Rain," in which a just a bass and a vocal are heard
for about 30 seconds. This is important because any hiss destroys
    the atmosphere of this song.

The lead singer's vocals are reminiscent of Morrison's from the
Doors' "Strange Days" era, especially in the song "Thorn of Crowns."

All in all, a very satisfying CD. I hope to hear more from this
    band soon.

By the way, the "Ocean Rain" CD is an import. Newbury Comics has
    it. It costs (gulp!) $18.99...

I don't believe there has been any other mention of Echo & the Bunnymen
elsewhere, so I figure I'll talk about them here.

Many of E&tBunnymen's cd's are starting to be printed domestically,
so the price is falling to the normal ($13.99 - 15.99) range.

They released a self-titled album last winter which got them noticed
by the American charts. If anybody wants a sampling of their music,
they released a compilation of hits called "Songs to Learn And Sing"

    (catchy title, eh?)
