468.0. "CD Players that DO Work" by GOBLIN::ROSENBERG (Dick Rosenberg VRO5-2/C7) Wed Sep 24 1986 12:08

I've read quite a bit lately about CD players that don't work properly.
It seem that the worst offenders are the Magnavox 1041/2041 and
the Sony D-5s. I think the time has come for a note on players that
DO seem to work properly (or at least where there have been no notes
to the contrary). I'd start with my Magnavox 1040, but that's no
longer available. How about a DEC-Noter's listing of CD players
    with Frequency-of-Repair Record = 0?

My Magnavox 2041 has never been sick.

BTW, full size Sony units have had problems too...
468.2Include age and amount of useGENRAL::LAURENCEWed Sep 24 1986 15:394
I don't think this will be very useful unless the age and amount
of use the player gets is included. The problems with my unit
didn't show up until about 6 months after I bought it.

Never had any trouble.

Bought in December of 1984 in Hong Kong and has averaged a couple of
discs per week since.

468.4COVERT::COVERTJohn CovertWed Sep 24 1986 19:0016
I had horrible problems with my CD-X1 (and am not the only reader of this file
who had problems). After Tweeter service told me "tough" -- I would have to
put up with flaky operation on one-fourth of all my disks, I managed to get a
salesman to call up Yamaha and get permission to send the unit to a Yamaha
service center in New York, where the whole transport and laser assembly was
replaced.

The problem first showed up with "Crush" by Orchestral Manuvres in the Dark.
It would not start at the beginning of any track and would occasionally skip
while playing. It and several other disks misbehaved while fast forwarding
and reversing (sometime the reverse would move FORWARD).

The TEAC PD-11 seems to be the same player, and a friend's unit showed the
same problems when I tried the O.M.D. disk on it.

Our Technics SL-P2 has been chugging along since November of 1984.
No major problems that blowing a little dust off the disc didn't
    cure.

Our Technics SL-PJ1 has worked flawlessly since June, 1985.
Also, I have a Sanyo CP500 (cheap: $165 at BEST products) that has
had no problems since I got it in Jan. 1986. All these notes about
problematic players scares me--I usually have terrible luck with
Audio equipment. (The first CP500 I picked up didn't work at all-took
it back the same day, replaced it, and no problems since.)

No problems with my Sony CDP-30 (that blowing dust out of the
transport wouldn't cure). I've had it since Oct '85 and play
10-20 disks a week on it.

468.9SLP-7 Plays OKYOUNG::YOUNGThu Sep 25 1986 11:2713
I have an SLP-7 (I think that's the number) which I bought because
it was the first CD player I saw under $300.00 (the price at which
my wife and I agreed we would wait for). The only problem it has
is with the door; sometimes it forgets whether it is open, closed,
or in-between. This will occasionally cause it to do the wrong
thing when pressing the open/close door button. Sometimes it will
close the door and immediately open it (or vice-versa), sometimes
it will open the door a fraction of an inch instead of closing it.
The behavior is humorous; give it a nasty look, hit the button again
and it does the right thing.

My Sony D-7 follows me everywhere, and it has never failed to track a
disk. Aside from exhibiting the firmware bug described in an earlier
note, the programmable features work flawlessly.

I bought the D-7 because I wanted to be able to take it to work
with me, and I've been extremely happy with it.

My SLP-7 does the same thing and the SLP-7 that I got my sister
for Chrismas has similiar door problems. My guess is the switch
is flakey. I think I'll find the nearest Technics service place
and if I can get it fixed. Other than the door, its a very nice
    player.

I've had a Yamaha CD-X2 for just over a year (since August 1985). I play an
average of 5-10 disks per week. No problems.

I moved during this period, and it was transported (with the packing
screws inserted). No problem.

Paul YOUNG::YOUNG has forgotten that we did have one other transient
problem with the SLP-7. One day during a long party (the Great
Homemade Ice Cream bash, and annual event, as some of you know)
when it had been in use for several hours straight (it was pretty
warm out also, and very humid - rained all day), it stopped displaying
any useful info on the LEDs (liek the track number, remaining time,
etc.), although it containued to work fine. We shut it off after
the party, and was fine the time time anyone tried it, and has been
fine since. I suppose it had managed to overheat. I too find the
door (usually referred to as "the mouth") vagaries rather amusing,
and it certainly sounds nice and is quite cat-proof; I (or the cat)
can joggle the thing while it is playing without any trouble.

My roommate's Technics SL-P2 has worked flawlessly for just under a year.
It's hard to say how often we use it... it will sit there for a couple of
weeks unused and then all of a sudden we'll play 5 discs.

My guess is we average maybe 20 discs a month... never a problem yet.

I have had a Hitachi DA5000 for over a year now. I moved and took no
precautions (locking the transport mechanism, etc) and have taken it different
places with no problems. I had a SANYO model that died in less than a year
previous to this machine. The Hitachi even SOUNDS much better.

I and three friends all bought Technics SLP-2's approximately 2

    minute jazz disks (Verve catalog).

I have had a Technics SL-PJ1 player for almost a year and it has
performed flawlessly. It was the first good CD player I saw for
under $200. Its been played for hours straight, including playing
one disc on repeat all night. Also have an ADC player, don't know
the model number, that has worked fine. Both have been transported
    several times without incident.

I must say that the Technics players must be the easiest to use
and program. If you want track 7, you press 7 and press Play.
    Want to program tracks 6 and 2? Press <6>, <program>, <2>, <program>,
    and <play>. Simple.

My Technics SLP-2 is just over a year old, and has had moderate use

that undoing all the transport screws didn't cure (blush).

Another happy Sony CDP-30 owner! Even transported in car from TX
to MA w/o problems. For a period, it must have averaged about 4-6
hours of play daily, as it was only the 2nd CD player in my dorm
and *everyone* wanted to record off of it. It was down to about
10 hours a week until my housemates cheapo ($99) job cratered and
mine got put in as first string again. Back to about 2-4 hours
a day and still goin' fine.

Got a D-7S recently that's been putting in upwards of 5 hours a
day at work and occasionally a commute that last almost exactly
one disk. I have it sitting on the passenger seat driving
mini-speakers and have gotten to skip maybe twice (and those were
substantial bumps!) We'll see how long it lasts...

Nothing but satisfaction. This is the unit that uses 6-packs.
haven't used the "random play" feature as much as I thought I
would, but I often will put 4 or more CDs of a related theme in
a 6-pack and have it supply background music for hours. I've had
it since March and use it frequently. By the way, I think its
remote control is very "user-friendly" considering the large number
    of functions it provides.

I have had my Sony CDP-101 since October '83. It has gotton fairly

a burr on the tracking assembly causing wild skipping). Once it

    re: .40 & .41

yeah you're right guys, but I'd like to mention just ONE point :

Technology has improved quite a lot, when you buy things such as
CD players, if it's wrong, it won't work. If not, then it will work
    for long.

NOW, if you have any problems (I had some with my Technics SL-P2),
look around your player, take a look at the technical requirements.
You'll certainly notice that the range of temperatures (for instance)
is quite narrow. So be careful where you put your CD player. Most
tracking problems are due either to heat or to bad CD. Beware to
magnetic fields too ... (I've made some experiences ...)
NEVER put it between amplifier and tape deck or so ...

    Pierre.
