450.0. ""Pictures at an Exhibition" on piano" by HECTOR::RICHARDSON () Tue Sep 02 1986 14:00

Somewhere in here there was a note about this, but it must have
been a tangent from the original subject, because I can't locate
the note. Anyhow, for the person who wanted a recording of "Pictures
at an Exhibition" (Moussorgsky), I just bought a copy of the original
piano arrangement (plus Ashkenazy's orchestration, which is quite
a bit different from the usual Ravel orchestration, which is much
lusher) from Electric Grammophone. It is London 414 386-2. The
orchestra is the Philharmonia Orchestra (they repeat the entire
sequence of "pictures" again with the orchestration), and Ashkenazy
himself is the pianist. A very nice recording! We also have a
recording done by Kazuhito Yamshita on a *GUITAR*, if you collect
recordings of this piece, which is also nice. It is RCA RCD 14203.

I also have the London recording, and find its quality
excellent. The contrast of the piano and orchestral
arrangements is also quite interesting.
