| I got my NEC CD-500 about 4 months ago and haven't had any problems with
it at all. I paid about $270.00 for it on sale, so $249 sounds pretty
good. The sept issue of Digital Audio has some of the specs on this and the
other NEC players. Going by the specs, you would most likely pass the CD-500
up. They're not bad but then they're not great. I did A/B comparisions between
the CD-500 and some mags.,technics,sonys,and akai's that were in the $300 -
$400 range. On sound quality the NEC was as good as any of the others and beter
then some of the technics and sony's. It doesn't have some of the features that
some of the higher priced models had like playing segments of songs, or fast
forward scanning of songs. It does have a good designed and easy to use remote
control unit that I use all the time. You can do all programming, track skipping,
volume control, open/close door all from the front pannel or the remote control.
The back of the unit has 2 sets of stereo outputs. one is for a constant output
signal level, and the other is for a variable output signal level. If you use
the variable output, then you can control the volume with a knob on the front
pannel or the remote unit. All in all I like the unit, have had no problems
with it and think for $249 it's a good deal.
