402.0. "CD Player with Pitch Control" by BRAHMS::MATSUOKA () Mon Jul 14 1986 13:52

Since my SLP-7 is in his death bed, I started looking into a new CD player.
I am impressed with the features offered in modestly priced fourth
generation players such as 2x over-sampling, digital filtering, and dual
DACs. However, I have been unable to find a model (<$600) which had
pitch control. Does anyone know of any consumer model with this feature?
    Thanks in advance.

The only one I've heard of with a pitch control, is that Nikko 60-CD
model, and it apparently sounds awful.

I went to Lectra City in Burlington and Cuomo's to gather whatever
information available on the Nikko CD player. The model has numerous
fascinating features such as the ability to store 60 discs internally,
random access to any one or sequence of the 60 discs, and INDEPENDENTLY
adjustable (+- 5%) pitch and tempo. This model can gobble up my
entire CD collection thus solving my CD storage problem altogether!

Alas, listing at $4,395.95, which would buy new shoes for the children
and a lot more hair curlers for the wife (if I had either), it is
    way over my budget.

I hope this model is a harbinger of more unusual, feature-laden players
to come. In the mean time, I will keep looking for a more proletarian
    model with the feature.

Will a modification to a normal player's clock circuit be sufficient
    to change the pitch?

The Denon 1500 had a very good review by Digital Audio magazine,
    but no pitch control though.

You might try to get a used (?) SLP-8; I have had no trouble with
mine (new in December 1983 still running just perfectly).

I didn't know that SLP-8 had the pitch control. I will start looking
for a new or used one. Thanks.
402.6"Domestic Japanese" PlayersLATOUR::GSCOTTWed Jul 16 1986 19:149

I think that the pitch control is more popular on the Japanese version
of Japanese players because of some local "sing-along-with-the-music"
activity that is popular there - the pitch needs to be varied so that
you can sing along easily. In other words, you might be able to find a
Domestic Japanese player with the pitch control; be careful of warranty
    coverage though.

Just curious (I have an SL-P8) what's wrong with your SL-P7?

    RE: .7

About a year ago, my SLP-7's drawer started operating flakily. When
the open/close button is pressed, the drawer extends and retracts
without coming to rest in the open position. I had to sharpen my
reflex to put in or retrieve a disc quickly. This quirk had remained
a minor and only inconvenience until another more serious problem
arose. About a month ago the player began to have occasional
problem reading any track on any disc. After the play button
is pressed the player whirls the servo system for a few minutes
eventually giving up by displaying the total number of tracks
and total playing time on the disc. When it does find a track, it
sometimes repeats random sections indefinitely. (It is rather frustrating
to listen to Handel's _Messiah_ and realize the player decided to repeat
a portion of the _Halleluiah_Chorus_ till kingdom come rather than to
play it through to the glorious conclusion.) The problem became
occasional to intermittent to frequent. I suspect that the problem is
with the alignment of the laser tracking subsystem.
There are two reasons why I have not sent the unit for a repair.
First, I had voided the warranty by modifying the analog circuit
(installing better op amps and caps). Second, I like to fix any
electronic equipment myself: I just ordered a service manual for the
unit. I hope this is not a foolhardy adventure.

P.S. How do you like the pitch control feature on your SLP-8?

I have an SLP-8 and haven't had any troubles as of yet(knock on
wood). I can sympathise with your problem because I have been
wanting to upgrade my player but can't find any players with a
pitch control. If you are interested in a used SLP-8, the Hi-Fi
Listening Shop in Marlboro, MA has one but I don't know if
it's for sale. It might be worth a call.
