387.0. "good CD stores ??" by DPHILL::HTINK () Tue Jun 17 1986 09:44

    My son wants to spend some graduation money on CD's. His tastes
    are broad ranging from garbage (my interpretation) to classical.
    Can anyone recommend a good store in the Framingham - Lowell -
    Worcester area ?

    Thanks...

387.1Try Strawberrys or LechemereDSSDEV::MUNYANSteve MunyanTue Jun 17 1986 10:2610

    Strawberry's has a wide selection and has semi-reasonable prices.
    Every so often they run a $2.00 off sale which makes their prices
    some of the best I've seen.

    Other than that try to catch a 20% off sale at Lechemere. They
    seem to have them once a month or so.

Rock-mania in Framingham has an excellent selection of 'garbage', w/quite
reasonable prices. I just picked up "Talking Heads - Little Creatures" for
$14.99. A majority of their stock is $14.99. They stock mainly Rock.
They are located on Rt. 9 East just past the Rt. 126 overpass.

Strawberries has a good selection of Jazz. Lechmere has a little of
everything.

387.3Electric GramophoneLSMVAX::DEUFELDaniel Allen DeufelTue Jun 17 1986 11:0011
    For classical disks, try The Electric Gramophone on Route 20 in
    Sudbury. The owners, Rick & Karen Oakley know their stock and are
    most helpful.

    Disks are (for the most part) $16.00 each but there are some overstocks
    that are tagged at $13.00-$14.00 to move them. (The overstocks are
    just that. The lower price reflects a desire to move them, not a
    decrease in quality.)

    This place is highly recommended!!!

387.4More Electric GramophoneWHICH::YERAZUNISTue Jun 17 1986 11:3715
    Electric Gramophone has an interesting policy- they don't normally
    accept returns (except for defective merchandise), but they DO
    ENCOURAGE you to test-listen any disk you are wondering about.

    To this end, they have a rather nice sound room, Allison 8 speakers
    and Luxman electronics, well furnished (live end/dead end, as any
    good listening room should be).

    Rick and Karen are both musically educated, if you say you want
    Wagner, they can probably tell you what they have in stock without
    looking.... and give you a critical review of each production as
    well.  Very sharp.

    The E.G. is in Sudbury Plaza- which is a tiny mall-let just east
    of the bridge that Rt. 20 goes over.

    This place is located in the channel mall in back of caldor's on
    rt. 9 in framingham. There selection is not as good as rock n' mania
    but the prices on most disk are usually a buck cheaper. If you buy
    four or more you save a dollar on each disk. I can usually find
    disk there that rock n' mania won't carry.

O'Coin's in Worcester (Mill Street) has good prices. When you walk in you
won't see a mass of CD's because they only have one copy of each out on
display. The cabinet behind the counter is chock-full of disc though.
Usually when I see a CD somewhere else that I want I wait and check them
first. If they have it then I usually save.

I also recommend Electric Grammaphone. I ALWAYS check their markdown bin.
It's not unusual to find a disc there for $13.00 and then look at the regular
bins and see the very same disc there for $16.00! If you're not into
classical then go somewhere else...

    It should be noted, too, as far as Rock'n'Mania goes, that they
    have a number of "imports" that aren't available in the chain
    stores.

    If you start to buy a disc at Electric Gramophone for the full price
    when there is also a copy in the markdown section, Rick will charge
    you the markdown price - he knows which things he has extra copies
    of. We've bought a lot of $13 discs from him. He also sometimes
    marks discs down to $10.
387.9I can't find the E.G.GAYNES::WALLNot The Dark KnightFri Jun 27 1986 09:2612
    At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot....

    Could someone be more specific about the location of the Electric
    Gramophone? I can find Sudbury Plaza readily enough, but I can't
    seem to locate the store.

    Is it in the building with the Star Market, or the building with
    the CVS store? Or have I missed the mark completely?

    I want to give them some business, but only if I can find them.

387.10Yes, Virginia, it is possible to find EGGOBLIN::ROSENBERGFri Jun 27 1986 09:5322
    Electric Gramophone is HARD to find. First of all, it is literally
    a hole in the wall store. Second of all, it is in Mill
    Village, not Sudbury Plaza. Mill Village is a collection of small
    shops (Duck Soup is good if you like cooking) about a mile east of
    Sudbury Plaza. There are two traffic lights in between, on where
    the new shopping mall is (the one with Marshall's and Prime Value
    Mart) and the second right at Mill Village. Mill Village does not
    look like a mall. Most of the stores face the parking lot in back.
    There is a furniture store of some sort facing Rte 20. Once you
    find your way into Mill Village EG is on the third floor above a
    hairdressers. There are small signs but I don't remember what they
    say. If I haven't given you sufficient directions (or if you try
    mine and get close) call Rick at 443-3703. He is the first to realize
    that the place is hard to find and will be glad to tell you how
    to get from wherever you are to there. Although finding the place
    is somewhat of an adventure, IT'S DEFINITELY WORTH THE EFFORT!!!!!
    If anything is a pleasant surprise, it's discovering what exists
    after climbing two flights of stairs that smell like hairdresser.

    				Good Luck,

387.11Wanted: Jazz version of the Electric GramophoneTLE::CLARKWard ClarkFri Jun 27 1986 13:0715
    I visited the Electric Gramophone for the first time last Saturday
    (in search of walnut CD racks). I'm glad that I phoned for directions
    because even when I got to the intersection where they're located,
    I wasn't sure I'd found them. I saw no sign at all from Rt. 20.

    The selection of classical CDs has to be seen to be believed.
    Classical buffs will be in 7th heaven.

    Because my musical taste is mostly jazz-oriented, I asked Rick if
    he planned to expand his selection beyond classical titles. He
    said that he would if he knew anything about jazz (which he claimed
    he didn't). He did offer to expand if he could find a jazz devotee
    who was willing to work long hours for low wages.

387.12There is a sign on 20PAUPER::GETTYSBob Gettys N1BRMSat Jun 28 1986 09:208
                There is a sign visible from Rt 20, but it is hard to
        find. If you come to Rt 20 from Concord Road (the one right
        there at the lights), and you look at the building just to the
        left (across Rt 20 from Concord road), up high there is a sign.
        I don't think that you could ever see it and drive safely down
        Rt 20 in either direction though.

387.13re: Newbury ComicsLSMVAX::DEUFELDaniel Allen DeufelMon Jun 30 1986 11:1720
    I had occasion to stop by Newbury comics in Framingham last week
    and came away rewarded for my effort. Upon paying for a double CD
    (Handel's Esther) I was asked if I was on their mailing list. When
    I said "no" I was asked if I would like to be. Not one to turn down
    Junque mail I filled out their form. When I had completed it the
    clerk filled in the bottom section, detached it, and handed it back.
    The bottom of the form is, when properly endorsed, a coupon good
    for $3.00 off the sticker price on EACH CD purchased in one swell
    foop. Thus, given a $14.99 sticker price on their classical disks
    (typical), if I purchase 10 disks at one time I will end up saving
    $30.00. Note, this is a one shot deal and comes with what seems
    to be a .+30 day expiration date. I guess I'll save my pennies for
    one fair size orgy. I can handle $11.99 disks.

    The moral of this story is "My wood stove L O V E S Junque Mail".

    			Cheers,
    			-Abdul-

387.15Where??!!NATASH::WAGNERSat Sep 20 1986 17:2724
    I just came across a store which might be of interest to anyone
    seeking the more obscure discs which are out. This store is dedicated
    primarily to collectible comics and used albums. However, they
    have a good selection of other than top 40 albums, cassettes and discs.
    I went in looking for out of print albums, so I didn't spend much
    time on the discs, but did talk to the proprietress at length.
    She will accept orders over the phone, to be picked up at the buyer's
    convenience upon arrival. She had a whole shelf full of special
    order lps, cassettes and a few cds (anyone interested in Greatest Hits
    of the Monkees on CD?) The one catch is that the store is in Townsend,
    MA. For most of you, there is good reason why you don't know where
    that is. But, if you're having trouble finding a disc you want,
    and the location is reasonable for you, you might want to give them
    a call;
    		Records on the Common
    		256 Main St.
    		Rte 119
    		Townsend, Ma
    		617-597-5000

    Jim

    Oh yeah! Almost forgot - prices are $14.90 for most cds. Not great,
    but ok.
387.16Untouchable Sound in Shrewsbury, MAAQUA::ROSTObedience to the law guarantees freedomMon Jul 18 1988 11:2620

    Another new CD-only store in central MA:

    Untouchable Sound

    They're in the Olde Shrewsbury Village mall in Shrewsbury, MA, on
    Rt. 9 eastbound, also accessible form Rte. 20.

    They sell Technics CD players and some accessories (storage cases,
    etc.) in addition to CDs. They allow you to audition before you
    buy any CD and have a listening room set up like a living room for
    this purpose. They also have a few players lying around on shelves
    with headphones for when the listening room is occupied.

    Prices are on par with most other stores, $15.99 seemed average.
    They have some classical and jazz but the emphasis is rock and
    they have a large "oldies" bin as well. Also a small amount of
    imports.

    Colorado Springs:

    I buy most of my discs from LASERLAND on Academy Blvd, next to Target.

    They offer 10% off on any disc 14.99 and up, but right now they
    are selling all discs for just over 11.00.

    They have a pretty good selection.
