386.0. "Starry, Starry CD" by 15749::ARVIDSON (Dan Arvidson - DTN 247-2437) Fri Jun 13 1986 14:09

I am new to the CD world, expensive CD world I must add, and have this
question - Should I see stars thru my CD?

I do not have a player, yet(I have a raincheck for the D7 thru Leechmere),
but, I went out to Caldor's during there 15% off all CD's sale and purchased
two CD's. After opening the package and examining the CD I noticed when held
up to a light stars. Should I be concerned?

Are the stars you are referring to light shining through the metal
surface? If so not to worry, I have several such disks which still
play fine on my machine. All this means is the aluminized surface is
not perfect - what is these days?

I'm not sure if you're really referring to "stars", i. e., "points"
of light, or just overall light transmission thru the reflective
    layer.

The layer is quite thin. In many CD's, you can see a bright outdoor
scene right through the disk. I believe that the CD standard calls
for a reflectivity of > 78%...so some light will be absorbed; some
    passed.

    "Stars"??

If the coating really has pinholes, that's poor production!
For small pinholes -- like small fractions of a mm -- the ECC on
good players will read thru like there's nothing there. Large
pinholes? Well..... How large? "depends". (sorry)

Stars as in pinholes of light that shine thru. Much like when an eclipse
is coming and you manufacture a device from a coffee can to see it with.

They are very small. I guess that at the time, not having a CD player but
having CD's I was wondering if I should be concerned about teeny stars of
light. I since have received my player and playing the disk is no problem.
I guess it comes down to if I see planets I should be very concerned.

Being able to see bright lights though a CD isn't too bad; seeing
"stars" doesn't bother me if it plays ok; but...

I once bought two CD's (and quickly returned them) that I could
see label from other side (not with the bright light between me and
CD, but behind me). They were very noisy, tended to skip and
would sometimes hang at the beginning of a track.

    Bad stuff...
