384.1 | Upside down? | WHICH::YERAZUNIS | | Wed Jun 11 1986 18:43 | 5 |
| Don't suppose you tried putting the disk in upside down as a
countermeasure, did you?
Well, it's just an idea.... :-)

384.2 | Yup. Any my unit goes our of warranty soon. | PHOBOS::WICKERT | Dave. DTN:321-5206 | Thu Jun 12 1986 11:13 | 17 |
| Absolutely!!! My 302 has exactly the same problem but it is thermal
related. It is about to go out of warranty and I don't know what
to do about it. I have had bad experiences with the quality of
two Sony authorized repair shops in the local Philadelphia area.
While they do attempt to burn the unit in, they have wide open shelves.
And are not willing to repair something that they don't see as being
broken. The unit runs out of warranty in a few weeks.
The problem is real spooky. When you hit PLAY, the disk starts
to spin up, the red SCAN light does not go off, the disk spins down,
the door opens and the drawer slides out... and all you did was
hit PLAY.

384.3 | Extend the warrenty... | BPOV09::DANEK | | Thu Jun 12 1986 12:25 | 19 |

I don't know if this helps. I just got my 302 and inside the box I found an
offer from SONY to extend the warrenty from 1 year to 3 years. There's a cost
for this, though...$79. In addition to the warrenty extention you get:
o one free "tune-up" to be done after a year of ownership.
o a free demo disc (their jazz disc, I've heard it and it's pretty
good).
o subsciption to their newsletter.
This doesn't sound like a bad deal. I don't know if you can still apply for
this with a week or two left on your warrenty but it's worth a try. The
application form is pretty simple (you can pay with check or chargecard). If
you're interested then send me mail and I'll make a photocopy for you.

384.4 | Make Sony eat the cost. | AMBER::KAEPPLEIN | | Thu Jun 12 1986 14:00 | 11 |
| Call Sony and get them to fix it. Be obstinate.
Sony made some changes to the transport mechinism, probably as a
result of these problems. Don't believe them if they tell you they
never heard of the problem before. Tell them you want the revised
transport installed.
I bought the set of service manuals for Sony CD players and every
one had an update booklet for the revised transport mechinism.
I passed some of the manuals along, but might have the 302 and be
able to tell you the starting serial number of newer machines.

Please do look for the serial numbers. I'd like to know.

Ditto for me!!! I too have a Sony 302 which I purchased at Cuomos ($450)
about 2 months ago. I let it run in continuios mode for a week when I got
it. So far, no problems, but I feel like a guy who installed asbestos pipe
insulation 30 years ago, or like a grunt soldier who was at the first test
of the A-bomb ...

| The supplement does not say what was fixed, but{changes seem to
be to the transport itself, and some logic on the main board. The
changes arn't really highlighted, so it takes some study to see
what exactly changed. One thing I noticed is that the disk hold-down
piece is{a much more rigid molding (to reduce reading errors from
vibration).
The changes are in Supplement No. 1, November, 1985. Subject:
Mechinism Deck Change.
Applicable serial numbers:
CDP-302 (US) 823,601
CDP-302ES (Canadian) 702,301
CDP-520ES (US) 803,701
CDP-650ESD (US) 800,801
Sorry, I didn't keep any other manuals exce{t for the DAC702ES and
the PCM-1610.

| Mark, do you know whether this problem also exist on the CDP-102?
I have the 102 and sometimes it does not lock onto the beginning
of the disc if the machine is not warmed up. In a previous note
few other readers who own 102 seemed to have similar problem.
Thanks

384.9 | it doesn't like the toons...? | REMEDY::KOPEC | going, going... | Mon Jun 16 1986 11:18 | 6 |
| Occasionally my Mitsubishi DP-103 will spit the disk back out because
it got confused during spin-up... but it has been doing it at the
same low (~1%?) rate since I got it two years ago, so I haven't
worried about it much...

| The changes are for all the '02 type mechinisms. Sorry, I don't
have the serial numbers for that model. If anyone calls Sony, please
tell us what they say about the changes since I'm only guessing.
