383.1in the bay areaSKYLRK::POLLAKThen there where three..Tue Jun 10 1986 15:414
     In California, bay area, the prices run from $12.99 to $14.99 for
    the same disk, just depends on where you buy it.
     I've seen them as low as $11.99 at Federated to $14.99 at Rainbow
    records for your basic rock and roll disks.
383.2Boston pricesTLE::CLARKWard ClarkTue Jun 10 1986 19:335
    Boston area prices seem to be about the same as California:
    $14.95 regular price, $12.99 on sale. Classical discs and speciality
    labels are often $1-$2 more.

Use directory search with key=BUYING_CDS, this will give you all info
re: prices/availability (if noters conciencously add keys, as would make
sense).

383.5Small Town Prices8702::MASSIGLIATue Jul 08 1986 16:039
    In Colorado Springs, which is a smaller city than either Boston
    or San Francisco (population: ca. 250,000), prices seem to be $14.99
    or $15.99. (Naturally, you're familiar with the American scam of
    pricing at a penny below the nominal price for looks). We sometimes
    have a sale where popular titles can be had for $12.99, but most
    often, they put junk on sale.

    Und was kostet das Zeug in Deutschland?

    > Was kostet das Zeug in Deutschland?

    I spoke with a guy in DEC Munich today and he said that CDs are
    almost twice the price for imported labels.
383.7CD's real cheap!!NOVA::LAVASHGeorge LavashTue Jul 08 1986 18:0312
    I just came back from Rochester, NY. There is a great store out
    there called the House of Guitars. Except for real exoctic CD's
    the basic price is ....$11.98!! So naturally I bought a few. I
    was real surprised that the prices were as high as they are here
    in New England.

    Oh, one thing about the HOG, (if you ever go there) they don't believe
    in inventory control. You have to hunt through stacks and piles
    and boxes to find things. But this makes music shopping a little
    more fun

383.8From Berlin to Harvard SquareCOVERT::COVERTJohn CovertTue Jul 08 1986 21:1912
At Zum Holz in Berlin, they have an excellent selection of pop (no classical)
with all discs at DM 29.00 ($13.28). I bought Zoolook and Keith Jarrett
trio's Standards Live there last time I was in town. And if I take the
stamped export certificate back to the store next time I'm in Berlin,
I'll get 3.56/disc ($1.63) back, making them cost only $11.65.

I haven't seen prices that low anywhere else in Germany.

Newbury Comix in Harvard Square was having a $2 off sale, so we bought a
bunch, but even with $2 off discs were $12.99 to $16.99.

    re .5,.6,.8:
    CD prices have been pretty stable in Germany as long as the medium
    has been around. There are price differences between the shops,
    of course. The prices mentioned in .8 are quite good for Germany,
    though pop CDs usually are around DM 30, classical around DM 33-36.
    Whether or not the prices are good for Americans visiting here,
    is another matter... when the dollar was 3.50 the CDs here were
    much cheaper than in the States. Now, they tend to be more expensive.
    But for us living here there has been no change...

    Today's rate for converting cash in Germany is DM 2.11 for a dollar
    (converting $ -> DM) and DM 2.21 in the other direction.

383.11and in Holland...HYDRA::FEINBERGDon FeinbergMon Jul 14 1986 10:2312
CD prices in Holland seem to be stable, in Guilders.

When I was travelling there regularly, the disks were about
HF43.- to about HF50.-

There were about US$0.29 to a guilder then (once went as low as $0.26!).
So, I got a number of CDs there for about $12. or $13.

They're still about HF45.- today. But the guilder is more like US$0.41 now.
That's about $18.50 a crack!

383.12Seven dollar difference?GAYNES::WALLI see the middle kingdom...Mon Jul 14 1986 13:218
    How about fluctuations in this country. My roommate bought Fresh
    Aire III (Mannheim Steamroller) at Strawberries and paid $23.00
    for it. He later saw the same disc at another store for $16.50.

    Any other experiences like that?

383.13In the Out DoorLATOUR::GSCOTTTue Jul 15 1986 14:127
    I purchased Led Zeppelin's In the Out Door for $21 at BCD one week;
    saw it at Strawberries for 15.99 the next week.

    Of course I DID get to listen to it for a week longer than anyone
    else.

    Ah, but was the one at Strawberries a domestic and the one at BCD
    an import? That would definitely explain the difference. I don't
    believe that BCD would charge $21.00 for a domestic CD.

    Most of the disk prices at Strawberries seem to have gone down recently
    from $15.99 to $14.99.
383.16LATOUR::GSCOTTWed Jul 16 1986 19:067
    re .13: No, I think they were both imports (but I could be wrong - I
    didn't see inside the Strawberries version). BCD seemed rather proud
    at the time that they even HAD In the Out Door. BTW, it was the normal
    price 2 weeks later at BCD.
