381.0. "So, Where are The BEATLES?!!!" by TRFSV2::BATTISTELLA (Infocom, the best adventures) Mon Jun 09 1986 11:17

I heard a while ago that The Beatles will be released on CD in the
spring. Well, it is almost summer now and there are no Beatles
CDs. Where are they? Anyone know when they might be out?

Help!! We need some BEATLES on CD!!!!

There were some rumors a couple of months ago that some agreements
had been reached, and that the Beatles' stuff would be released
on CD, starting with some of the later albums and greatest hits
    collections.

However, according to Digital Audio magazine, a spokesperson for
Capitol Records has denied that any agreement was reached. I don't
remember the exact issue of Digital Audio, but it was a few months
    ago.

I ASKED THE GUY AT ROCK MANIA ABOUT THE BEATLES STUFF LAST WEEK
AND HE SAYS THERE IS NO TRUTH TO THE RUMOR AT ALL. IN FACT HE CLAIMS
THINGS HAVE GOTTEN SO BAD THE BEATLES LAWYERS WANT TO PULL THE RECORDS
OFF THE SHELF. HE HAS BEEN PRETTY ACCURATE IN THE PAST.

    Ha,

Oh back when I bought my CD player, ( December 1983), A japanese
company had illegally released Abey Road in America. There were
only a few hundred ( I think) made. I bought it for $22.00 then.
When I last went to BCD in cambridge, I got to talking with the
guys and I said that I never see it anymore in stores and they said
the company had to take it off the market, forced by beatles rights
owners. I said I had one, and he told me the going price was $150.00
in New York. It sounds great, and it is considered a collectors
    item.

BTW-- The label is in all Japanese.

I do not know what to believe but I do not want to believe .3.

    I have heard various rumours:

    1) The Beatles will be coming out on CD in late spring of '86.

    2) The Beatles will be coming out soon as per Boston Globe article.

    3) George Martin has just finished remixing the Beatles tapes into
       Digital format (late May).

Does anyone have the real state of THE BEATLES????????

The thought of George Martin digitally re-mixing the tracks for
CD is a warm, happy thought. God, I hope it's true!

There are two discs on the market now which bear the Beatles
name. One is called "The Golden Beatles" and the other is
called "The Silver Beatles". I'm tempted to type in the
complete review from Digital Audio and Compact Disc Review,
but as an excerpt, the review of Golden says "Don't buy this
disc, even for its curiosity value. To do so would only
encourage this kind of shady hucksterism." He says that
the disc is a collection of bad interviews and pseudo-
Beatles songs credited to "The Yeadles" and "The Quorymen".
Performance is listed as 0.5 out of 10.0, and the sound
quality is 1.5 out of 10.0.

The Silver Beatles is "slightly more successful" being drawn
"from the Beatles' 1962 audition tape for Decca - the first
major label to turn them down, allegedly on the grounds that
guitar groups were on the way out." He goes on to say that
"The audition tape was never released in an authorized
commercial version, and there's no reason to believe that
this disc changes that." and "based on this tape, Decca was
not entirely crazy to have turned the Beatles down."
He rated Silver Beatles as 2.5 performance and 2.0 sound
    quality.

By the way, the reviewer is Daniel Rosenbaum, an old college
roommate of mine who had more albums than anyone I've ever
    known.

I did buy the "Silver Beatles" CD, and it's not bad. At the advice
of someone at BCD, I passed up "Golden Beatles". There is also
a widely available CD called "Beatles First" which is really a Tony
Sheridan record, with occasional back-up by the Beatles. Pass this
one up. There's also a double disc set of live recordings from
a club in Hamburg. I haven't heard it, but the word I've heard
    is: Avoid it!

Finally, there are at least a couple of CDs of Beatles songs being
performed by other groups, orchestras, baroque combos, etc. I suppose
these might be ok if you like this sort of thing.

    We want the real thing!!!

By the way, when and if they do start releasing Beatles CDs, I
suspect they'll release the "Greatest Hits" albums first, then,
when sales level off, release the original records. Finally, when
sales of these level off, they'll release the MFSL (or someone else's)
re-mastered versions. That way, if you're a real fan, they'll get
you to buy everything three times.
381.11You can help. Don't buy inferior stuff on CD!FXENG1::TTESTAPracticing MusicianWed Jun 25 1986 10:1813
I bought "Silver Beatles" Vol. I and Vol. II on cassette tape in
a bargain bin at Strawberries a few weeks ago for $1.99 each. Great
for collectors as it is a fair "Representitive Sample" of the Beatles
at that time (after all, these were the demo tapes given to Decca!)
But to pay big bucks for this on CD... (The tapes weren't that good
to begin with...) And MONO to boot... I must agree with a previous reply:
                   DON'T ENCOURAGE THEM!!!
    			   WE WANT:
     			ABBEY ROAD, and
    			SERGEANT PEPPER, and....
    			the list goes on...

It is true that the disks mentioned aren't worth the bother.

One can only hope that the originals are remixed for the new medium.

Our understanding is the Micheal Jackson owns the rights to the
music itself and that the issue is still in court because the former
Beatles and Yoko Ono are still contesting the right of ownership
    of the original songs.

The latest word that we have is that the disk will be released in
    December in the English versions.

But until you have a non-bootleg disk in your hand, you'll have
    to wait.

381.13We Want The Beatles!COMET2::LEVETTThu Jun 26 1986 15:2524
From an article that I read in THE WRITE THING, a Beatles fan
club magazine, Yoko was not all *that* upset that Michael Jackson bought
the rights to the Lennon-McCartney songs for 2 reasons. 1) After having
spoken to Michael about his thoughts on music, publishing, etc., felt
that he would treat the material with respect and not do anything that
would cheapen the Beatles image for sake of making a buck. 2) Michael
and Sean Ono Lennon are good friends! Don't know Pauls *real* reaction
to the whole ordeal.
From what I gather, and understand of music copyrights, publishing,
etc., M.J. would receive royalties on the printed music sold, recorded music
aired, and own the rights (as well as receive royalties) to decide who will
record the music in the future. Does this mean that M.J. has final say as
to whether or not Lennon-McCartney material (though previously released) has
the final say as to EMI/Capitol re-releasing Beatles material on a different
medium or does EMI/Capitol retain those rights? Does anyone know? Since the
"repackaging" or the re-release of the Beatles LPs (American or British) onto
CD would certainly not be cheapening them M.J. would have nothing to gain
but $$$ if that were so.
Just a thought...Anyone in the L.A. area care to call Capitol Records
and find out what they can (not necessarily about the M.J. portion) about
the release of Beatles CD's and post it here in the notes file? I'm sure
that it would be GREATLY appreciated by many.

    So, WHERE ARE THE BEATLES?

I'll tell you where they aren't...don't get "The Golden Beatles"
or "The Silver Beatles"...these CDs are ripoffs, according to a
    review in Digital Audio mag.

"The Golden Beatles" doesn't even have any full songs; just bits
and pieces -- it's mostly an interview album, and a badly recorded
    one at that.

"The Silver Beatles" has no Lennon-McCartney songs. Just early rock
    standards recorded badly.

    Stay away!!
381.15I've seen a good cover....BETHE::LICEA_KANEMon Sep 08 1986 19:308

Well, there is always "The Other Side of Abbey Road", by George
Benson (before he worked with QJ).

It's a *very* good cover, but it's still not the Beatles.
(But sounds like it's better than Gold or Silver.)

381.17Interview with Paul.BEAGLE::MULELIDTue Oct 07 1986 09:3316
Nothing new about the Beatles CD, but last saturday I saw a program
on french TV with an interview with Paul. It lasted about 30 min
and gave some old and new video clips as well.

In the interview the question about Michael Jackson buying the
rights and what Paul felt about it, he said that it had been a
fair deal. M.J. had paid 50 million dollars for the right and
he himself did not have any hard feelings towards Michael.
He did however think it would have been a bit stiff having to
pay 50 million for something he made himself for "free" as he
    put it.

    Still waiting.

According to one of the guys at BCD, their distributer is starting
to ask for estimates of initial orders of Beatles titles. I don't
know how reliable this is, but he said the first Beatles titles
should be available by next summer. He said that the record companies
agreed to pay double the normal LP royalties, which is what the
Beatles were asking, according to some other sources.

I heard on Maryland radio that some Beatles' CD's are to be out
before Christmas to catch the gift shopping market. I don't know
what to believe, but they seemed pretty sure of themselves...
(I don't expect them for at least a few months)
