380.0. "Ideal CD storage rack" by JOKE::ROBERTSON (Can't hear it? Are you Blind?) Mon Jun 09 1986 10:32

If you are looking for a cabinet or a holder for your disks,
consider this; Yield House(New Hampshire) makes furniture that
is either finished and assembled or unfinished and unassembled,
which include barristers(ususally used for books). I recently
purchased one made of pine for $89(unfinished) that will easily
hold 65 disks and if your somewhat handy you can add a shelf
that will easily hold another 65 disks for a total of 130 disks.

Considering the price of the ones sold at Lechmere, the barrister
design seems to make more sense and they look much better(to me
at least) with their glass or wood door(optional) plus they can
be stacked on top of one another.

Yield House also makes an over-size barrister that will hold
albums(I put one of these on the bottom with the CD one on top).

I believe they come in oak, pine, cherry(finshed only), and
    walnut(not sure about this one).

Just think, if you fill two of these up you'll have one huge
selection of 260 disks valued at about $3900. Whew!

ELECTRIC GRAMMAPHONE IN SUDBURY HAS A STACKABLE UNIT WHICH HOLDS
43 JEWEL BOXES FOR $25. THEY ALSO HAVE 2- AND 3-HIGH UNITS WHICH
GO FOR $48 AND $65 RESPECTIVELY. THE MULTIPLE UNITS ARE ALSO
    STACKABLE.

THE UNITS ARE ALL MADE IN VERMONT OF SOLID (NOT LAMINATED) WOOD
(NOT PINE). IT LOOKED LIKE WALNUT TO ME, BUT I'M NOT SURE. GOOD
    QUALITY - CHECK IT OUT.
380.2Walnut? - No Oak? - YesTLE::CLARKWard ClarkMon Jun 23 1986 22:0211
On the recommendation in 380.1, I visited the Electric Gramophone
last Saturday in search of the "walnut" CD racks.

They turned out to the same oak racks that I've seen elsewhere for
a few dollars less. They are reasonably good quality, but I'm looking
for walnut or some other dark-colored wood.

I didn't leave the EG empty handed - I now have two more CDs (and
    no rack).

Did you ask Rick for the name of the manufacturer? You might be
able to call and request a different wood, they might be interested
in experimenting to get more market share.

380.4Any wood you want as long as it's oakTLE::CLARKWard ClarkFri Jun 27 1986 12:5210
Rick told me that he had already asked the manufacturer for different
woods. They responded that they were only interested in building
    oak racks.

Rick did offer to try to get an unfinished oak rack so that I could
stain it to the color I want. Although this is less desirable that
real walnut or cherry (my top choice), it's better than blond oak
in a room of dark antique furniture.

I saw a rack at Service Merchandise which is a darker wood. It
is sold with the "TEAC" name on it. It looked like it would hold
about 20 disks, and it has glass doors. It also looked liked it
    would stack. Price $19.95.
