378.0. "International CD prices" by SHIRE::WENGER (Max Wenger @GEO) Wed Jun 04 1986 13:12

For the travelling CD enthousiast it might be worthwhile keeping a note
for the evolution of prices on the international market. I live in Geneva,
but have recently been to Italy, the UK, the US and Canada and have
observed the prices listed below, mostly for classical selections.

	Country sFr.	US$	BPd.
	------- ---------------------
	US (Boston)	30.-	16.-	10.7

	CANADA 32.-	17.-	11.2

	UK (London)	34.-	18.-	12.-

	ITALY 31.-	16.5	11.10

	SWITZERLAND	36.-	19.-	12.5

Prices are based on exchange rates valid on May 23rd and include all
sales taxes.

By shopping around a bit is possible to get 10-15% less than the prices
quoted above and occasionaly I have seen 30% less on special sales which
usualy excluded classical recordings. The weak Dollar makes currently the
US the obvious place to shop (if you can find what you want, that is).

378.1More prices ...SHIRE::WENGERMax Wenger @GEOWed Jul 23 1986 07:196
Just back from vacation on Palma de Mallorca, Spain. Prices observed range
around PSTA 3150.

Also many small specialized shops have opened in Geneva. Their prices
are sFr. 31.-/32.-, compared to 36.- at MIGROS, GP or other big dept. stores.

378.2London and GermanyKBOV05::TINIUSKaufbeuren, GermanyWed Aug 27 1986 10:4913
I bought 6 CDs in London last week, for 11.99 to 14.99 (for Chris Rea's
On the Beach). The local HiFi joint here in Kaufbeuren (Germany) sells
most pop CD's for DM 36,95, most classicals for DM 39,95.

(I think the costs about $1.53, the DM about $.49 these days).

About 3 months ago, World of Music, a gigantic record dealer in Munich,
was charging DM 52,00 for all Telarc CDs. When I asked about the unreasonable
price, they said it was because they stock so many imports, and have to
pay for them somehow...

378.3Report from Singapore and France.BISTRO::HEINHein van den Heuvel, Valbonne.Tue Sep 02 1986 09:3522
Just back from a vacation to Singapore. CD prices there range from
S$27 for popular to S$35 for japanese/classical. Your typical TELARC
recording would go for S$32. If you are willing to hassle a bit
    then you can get those prizes down by S$2 or S$3. ( 1 S$ = 2.1 US$ )

Both there in Singapore and here in France If found it was best to
stick to one little/personal shop IF they have most of the records
that you are looking for EVEN if an other shop would have a slightly
better price for a specific recording. Most shops are impressed if
you buy more then 5 or 10 CDs and are willing to give you a discount.
On top of that, if they start to know you a bit (=go there more
then once for longer then an hour), they will normally not make a
problem if you change your mind and decide you did not really like
the record you recently bought. They just take them back.

    Prices in France are ff130 - ff145 for popular and FF150 - 180 for
classical. You can get up to 20% discount if you are a regular
    customer. ( 1 ff = 6.7 US$ )

    Regards,
            Hein.

All I can say is "sure am glad I'm here where the prices are $12.99-16.99."

It just doesn't make sense for U.S. prices for discs made in France, Germany,
and the U.K. to be lower than the prices in the country they're made. Part
of it is probably higher taxes.

BTW, I think you got the exchange rate for Singapore backwards. As given, the
Telarc disks would cost US$ 67!

...and he has the FF rate reversed too...

These international price comparisons vary a lot with time as currency
exchange rates change. It seems to me that the CD prices in Germany,
expressed in DM, as well as in the US, expressed in $, have remained
quite stable for quite some time. Currently, the dollar being around
2 DM, the US prices seem low to us; but just think back a couple
of years when the dollar was well over DM 3, and the US prices would
have been very high for us! For those who don't have a chance to
    buy abroad, nothing has changed.

I found some bargains for 8 pounds in Hastings.
Italian prices increased last month to 27000 Lit (about $19) for
    DGG and Philips CDs.

I was just in Stuttgart, where I purchased the following:

Shadowfax, Too Far to Whisper, Windham Hill	DM 27.90 $ 13.95 ADD
Tangerine Dream, Underwater Sunlight, Teldec " " DDD
Mark Isham, Vapor Drawings, Windham Hill " " A?D
Falco, Emotional, Teldec " " ADD
	O.M.D., Architecture and Morality, Virgin " " A?D
O.M.D., The Pacific Age, Virgin DM 29.95 $ 14.98 DDD

All prices include tax (14%) which I could have gotten back if I had felt like
taking the time to deal with the paperwork. Considering that all but two of
the above are brand new releases, I was impressed with the prices.

The first four were purchased at Lerche, the last two at Karstadt. Almost
everything in the pop/jazz section of Lerche was the same price, with a few
things up to 32.90 (16.45). The classical CDs at Lerche appeared (in the
window) to be 32.90, as was much of what Karstadt had. Lerche has a "lowest
price" guarantee. I didn't take the time to look at classical CDs, having
decided I had spent enough money. The dollar was at or near an all-time low,
which it is already recovering from.
