371.0. "Custom CD racks anyone?" by THORBY::MARRA (All I have to be is what You made me.) Wed May 28 1986 16:50

    I may get into the oak rack business if anyone is interrested.

    Can you arrange it so that any pair of slots can either hold two
    singles or one double CD? That way you could rearrange the singles,
    doubles, etc. as your collections grows and changes. If you could
    build something that had this feature, I'd be very interested.
    I would guess the way to do it would be to provide removable dividers.

371.2hmmm good question - try this?THORBY::MARRAAll I have to be is what You made me.Thu May 29 1986 10:2846

    Hmmm That would take a rework of the whole theory. You see, I take
    oak and dado grooves into it (both sides at a time so they are parallel
    when a cd is in the slot) then flip the center piece and match it to
    another a do it again. All the cd's 'float' in their respective slot.

    What you want is to be able to move ths slots around. This would mean
    that I would have to reverse the whole thing and make boards that would
    fit into slots that would in turn hold the CD.

       	------------------            ------------------
        | |            | |            ||              ||
        ||------CD------||            | |            | |
        | |            | |      VS    ||====shelf=====||  a
        ||------CD------||            | |-----CD-----| |
        | |            | |            ||====shelf=====||  b
        ------------------            ------------------

    This way you could remove shelf a and put in a double cd. This rack
    wouldn't be as nice because I haven't found anyplace that sells oak
    that thin as stock. It would have to be planed, and that means BUCKS.
    or I would use pressboard (or something) as the little shelves.

    Another possible way to do it is to use pegs instead of slots or
    shelves. This would mean thousands of little pegs, but infinite
    flexibility:

    	side view:                front view:

    	+-----------------+    	+--------+--------+
    	|               |    	|-      -|        |
    	|               |    	|-      -|-      -|
    	|               |    	|-      -|        |
    	|               |    	|-      -|-      -|
    	|               |    	|-      -|        |
    	|               |    	|-      -|-      -|
    	+-----------------+    	+--------+--------+

    	 and - = pegs...

    think about it...

371.3Groove WidthNHL::NEILPeter C.Thu May 29 1986 13:054
	Why not make the grooves wide enough to hold more than one
	disc ?

371.4width*2 = #_of_cd's/2THORBY::MARRAAll I have to be is what You made me.Thu May 29 1986 14:1813

    If each groove were wide enough for double discs, and assuming that
    you are buying a rack to keep them from scratching each others cases,
    then you will need twice the rack to get the same amount of disc
    cases into a single sliced rack.

    I could easily have each slice two (or double) width. - I have my
    top two slices for doubles - occupied by 'The Wall' and the other
    is blank..

    suggestions?

371.5The "ideal" storage ...PDVAX::P_DAVISreally SARAH::P_DAVISThu May 29 1986 15:1713
    I think making the cabinets a little wider, and using the grooves
    to hold masonite shelves on which the discs rest, is the best plan.
    The grooves would be spaced closely enough to allow single disc
    shelves, but any shelf could be removed to create a double disc
    space. Also, the masonite shelves could be recessed from the front
    of cabinet, so as not to mar the appearance of the oak.

    Actually, if you could make drawers with partitions like this,
    I'd order a couple of dozen immediately! I like the Add n' Stack
    CD drawer system (30 discs/drawer, 3 drawers/cabinet), but it has
    molded plastic dividers that can't be removed.

371.6Thanks for the ideas...THORBY::MARRAAll I have to be is what You made me.Fri May 30 1986 08:5618

    I've been really considering the drawer scheme. Kinda like copying
    the modular design of CWD. I figure that since as yet I do not
    have a jointer (couple more months) I can only make things 6-8 inches
    wide. That means that I can make an x drawer system with either
    1 drawer/unit 3 cd's wide with removable partitions or x drawers/unit
    only 1 cd wide. The latter would be more costly and time consuming.

    I suppose I could make the top, sides, back and bottom out of oak
    plywood. (this stuff is about 50$ per 4x8 sheet) and cap the edges with
    solid oak and make the drawers themselves out of solid oak. This should
    look pretty good. As a matter of fact, I think I'll draw up some plans
    for one this weekend. 2 drawers, each 3 cd's wide and about a record
    album deep. This way I could make record cabinets, and then cassette
    cabinets. They could all match in basic design and exterior sizes
    with each being a cube. Hmmmmmm...

371.7Made to order?PDVAX::P_DAVISreally SARAH::P_DAVISFri May 30 1986 11:0514
    The drawers are the most efficient storage for large CD collections,
    since they don't consume a lot of vertical space. In other words,
    you can keep stacking them up as the collection grows. Also, when
    you pull out a drawer, the titles are easy to read (except on some
    Japanese imports) ... you don't have to turn your head sideways!

    I'm not sure what you meant about making the drawers "about a record
    album deep", unless you meant putting two drawer, each about a CD
    deep, into one cabinet. If so, I'd cast a vote in favor of making
    the cabinets 1 drawer deep, but stackable. As I said, except for
    the fixed dividers, I think the Add 'n' Stack drawers are just about
    ideal!

    1 record deep so that if you stacked a cassette cabinet onto a cd
    cabinet onto a record cabinet they would all have the same y and
    z dimensions, just different heights...
