366.2 | SLP-300 | MAX::RUSS | | Wed Jun 11 1986 13:33 | 13 |
| The unit on sale is the slp-300. I bought it about two months ago
from O'coins in Worcester. I paid 279.95 and got three free disks
with the purchase. (No bartering...that's the way it was offered)
If you count the disks at 15.00, my final price was about 235.00.
So far, it has been a fine machine. No problems at all. Fine per-
formance and all the bells and whistles you could ask for. I've
yet to read a review on the technical aspects of the player, but
I like it and that's what counts.
Good Luck,
Russ Currie

366.3 | Beat the big L. | FRSBEE::ROLLA | | Thu Jun 12 1986 13:38 | 8 |
| Sounds like you got a good deal.....beats Lechemere's price by
15 bucks. I think I'll get it there this weekend unless I
can find one cheaper somewhere else. That machine has all the
options I want.
Thanks for your input

366.5 | Subcodes | LATOUR::TREMBLAY | | Wed Jul 02 1986 15:21 | 11 |
| This months Digital Review has a article on the (lack of) use of
subcodes. Basically with each "frame" on the CD there are 8-bits
labeled P,Q,R,S,T,U,V,W which where to be used for such things as
Still video pictures (when hooked up to a TV ofcourse), song titles,
lyrics, song lead-ins and lead-outs, etc. These bits comprise about
15 megabytes on each CD. Unfortunately, it seems that lack of
agreement/demand for their usage leaves the entire use of subcoding
in limbo. It seems doubtful that it wil be standardized at this
time.

366.6 | Magnavox CD9510, $170 | OMEGA::QUIMBY | | Wed Jul 16 1986 11:51 | 35 |
| Magnavox portable (CD9510) on sale at Service Merchandise as of
July 15, not sure how long this lasts, for a few cents under $170.
I know the Burlington store has them in stock.
Player got a very nice review in the July issue of Digital Audio,
which looked at a number of portables. It is slightly larger than
the Sony and Panasonic/Technics portables, but is built very solidly
and sounds good.
Possible drawback #1: SM does not carry the optional battery pack,
and I am not aware of other local stores currently carrying the
player which might have the battery pack. I have been tracking
through North American Philips to find how to get one. There is a
parts (800) number in New Jersey which has promised to send me info,
will enter when it arrives.
Possible drawback #2: My player occasionally (one time out of 4
or 5) fails to read the number of tracks and time info when you
insert a disk -- don't know whether this is a design problem or
the individual player. It seems completely random, and either
power-down/power-up or reinserting the disk makes it all OK.
Possible plus: The player is the same one used in Philips' CD10
car stereo system -- where it is inserted in a DIN-sized carrier
that accepts speaker or low-level input from a receiver/tuner,
provides necessary switching and control functions, and can drive
a power amp. Maybe it will be possible to buy the carrier separately
someday? At any rate, this indicates (and the Digital Audio test
seems to confirm) that the player has been designed to deal well
with non-stable frames of reference.

new unit which works flawlessly.
Overall opinion -- solid, well-designed, slightly large portable.
