361.0. "indexing question" by GUMDRP::BARWISE () Fri May 16 1986 14:10

Could someone shed some light on the indexing feature of
    CD's? I have a Mag 1041 but the index read-out always stays
on "01". I had assumed that the index numbers were encoded on
the discs, especially on classical recordings. All of the
recordings I own make no mention of indexing in the notes.
      My questions, therefore, are:

      - is my player working?

      - are many/any discs encoded with index numbers?

    	Thanks! Rob

Yes, your player is fuctioning correctly. The reason that the index
stay at 01 is because the disc you have simply don't have index
    segments.

Index is a much neglected feature on discs, especially on classical.
Some disc available are known for having outrageously many indices
(something like an index point every few notes ;-) ) Just kidding.
But really, most disc don't use index.

On my Sony there is a window for Track, and a window for Index.
Usually there are only tracks, and for each track the index would
display 01. If the track has more than one index, then it would
increment through all the indices, then go on to the next track.

Thanks for the input, Charles. I was hoping my player was
OK but at the same time hoping they weren't neglecting what I
think could be a useful feature.

361.3Indexes? Indices?LATOUR::GSCOTTFri May 16 1986 20:0610
I have noticed that many Denon classical discs have indexes (indices?)
that are noted in the liner notes (and the back of the jewel box). One
of my Pink Floyd CDs also has several indexes.

I agree that the feature should be used more, particularly on longer
tracks. I would assume that whoever does the CD mastering figures that
"time is money" and doesn't take the time to figure out where indexes
    should go.

361.5Say it isn't soFRSBEE::ROLLAThu May 22 1986 13:4412
Correct me if I'm wrong. Do I understand that not all CD's are
indexed. I have been waiting to find a CD player on sale that
has this index option. Mainly because I would like to loop on
certain guitar leads or any other specific segment. I would think
this would be the musicians dream, no more FF,REW or moving the
needle. All the demo disc's I've listen to thusfar have had this
    Indexing.

Are we talking about the same thing ? I hope not.....

Apples and Oranges. Many CD players have an option to continually replay
a range of the CD defined the operator hitting the right button at the
start and end of the range.

The "index" feature is more like having subdirectories off the individual
tracks: specific parts of the music tagged and so marked on the cover.
This way, a symphonic movement would be all one track, but several
famous themes within the movement could be flagged with index points.
361.7You Want Programming!GALLO::GSCOTTThu May 22 1986 16:149
re .5: What you probably want is a CD player that can be programmed to
play a range of TIME rather than indexes. For example my SLP8 can be
programmed to play from track 1 time 2:12 to trace 1 time 2:30,
repeating that program forever. (You can also program it to play any
combination of time and tracks, e.g. track 1 thru 3, track 5 index 2
through index 5, track 6 time 2:00 to track 7 time 1:33, track 8 index
    2 to track 12 time 3:33).

The D7 has the 'repeat' function. You can go out into the middle

re .5, what you're refering to is generally called an
    "A-B repeat" option.

Yup, A-B repeat it is. Our Technics SL-P2 has it. Allows you
to repeat any section of the disk no matter how large or small.

The Sony D7 has it as well. If you want to play the same 1 second
of song over and over, you can.

10cc's "The Original Soundtrack" is the first CD I've ever seen the
"Index" used, "Une Nuit Paris" has three segments, individually
indexed. I was surprised that the next track reset the Index to 1
though. I somehow thought the Index numbers to be unique per disc.

361.15Lots of Disks Have Indexing, But....Lots of Players Can't Use ItAQUA::ROSTYou used me for an ashtray heartTue Sep 08 1987 17:3927

I have a couple of disks that use the indexes, and though my player
(Harmon/Kardon) reads out the index it will not allow you to jump
    to it.

Two disks are classical with one track but multiple indices (32
on one of them!) Thus, the only way to move forward is to use the
fast forward control, a real pain. And you can't program the player
to play certain segments of the music .

I have a number of pop disks on which the index "0" is used much
like separting grooves on LPs. The time readout in index 0 is
backwards, with negative numbers, thus counting down to the music.

On these, track 1 starts at 1/1, but track 2 starts at 2/0, then
goes to 2/1 where the music actually begins. Programming a track
will put you either at */0 if there is a zero index or */1 where
    there isn't.

On the live Jimi Hendrix CD all the in-between songs talking is
contained in index 0, all the music in index 1, a good use for the
    indexing.

I only wish my player had indexed programming, if I ever upgrade,
I will definitely look for that feature.

361.16And even if they can, do you really care?AIAG::BILLMERSMeyer Billmers, AI ApplicationsWed Sep 09 1987 13:599
I have a Telarc disk of Bach organ works which uses indexing for individual
movements within a piece; for example, if track 4 is a prelude and fugue,
index 4.0 might be the prelude and 4.1 the fugue. My Maggie 1051 allows me
to jump to the index number, too, although the way you have to do it is a
pain.

Despite having disks with indexing and a player with the capability, I don't
think I've ever bothered. Don't know how much I'd worry about it when buying
a player. Lots of other things are more important.
361.17It's easy with my Pioneer PD7010!FROST::EDSONDWed Sep 09 1987 16:5214

My Pioneer PD7010 has the capability to go back and forth through indexes
just like it was a track. Along with a next/previous track button, it has
a next/previous index button on both the unit and the remote. Although I
don't have a lot of discs with indexes, it's a nice feature to have the
ability to skip indexes!

Most of the discs I own that have indexes are classical.

If you had the CBS disc of Glenn Gould playing the Goldberg Variations
and you had to hold dwon the audio search button for ten minutes
to get to the 31st variation, you would wish your player had
programming by index...or else you would wish CBS had make the %&#@$
thing as 32 *tracks* rather than one track with 32 indices.

Bruce Springsteen's live 3-CD set also uses indexes for the songs
introduced by long stories like "The River." The story starts at
index 1, the song starts at index 2.
