346.0. "Brief reviews of recent purchases" by AKOV68::BOYAJIAN (Mr. Gumby, my brain hurts) Tue May 06 1986 02:11

    CHESS
I was surprised at the relatively low line levels on the CD,
but this is a nice double-disc anyway.

Neal Diamond, JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL Soundtrack
The movie sucked, but I always liked the soundtrack. Sounds
    	really good on CD.

    The Nylons, SEAMLESS
Really nice a capella (not really, as they do have a rhythm
box) material. It's worth getting solely for their cover of
    	"The Lion Sleeps Tonight".

THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW Soundtrack
Remarkably clean. If you like the music from this flick, the
    	CD is worth getting.

    Jane Siberry, NO BORDERS HERE
The bad news is that the CD doesn't sound particularly better
than the LP. The good news is "Who cares?, it's great anyways!"
Like CHESS, the line levels seem to be rather low compared to
    	other CD's.

Bought, but haven't listened to yet:

    Bauhaus, 1979-1983 VOLUME ONE
    Procol Harum, COLLECTION
Has mostly 1970's material, so doesn't overlap the other two
CD's, A WHITER SHADE OF PALE and A SALTY DOG, except for the
former's title song. This also has "Conquistador", but it's
the superior (in my opinion) live version.
The Benny Goodman Quartet, <forget the title>
An RCA Japanese import. First Goodman on disc that I
know of. Though it doesn't say, the recording is obviously
from the early 60's, since it's the reunion of the original
    	Quartet after 25 years.

My latest that I like quite well -

John Cougar Mellencamp's "SCARECROW". Some good old-fashioned
	mid-America R&R! Good-quality CD, as well.

346.5Thorogood, Zappa, and BerryAKOV68::BOYAJIANForever On PatrolFri Sep 26 1986 02:5224
I just picked up three CD's the other day.

GEORGE THOROGOOD AND THE DESTROYERS (Rounder). GT's first album
is finally out. Really good blues (I especially like "One Bourbon,
One Scotch, One Beer"). Doesn't sound particularly better than the
LP, but that doesn't bother me none. GT's second album, MOVE IT
ON OVER, is also available on CD finally, but I haven't got it yet.

Frank Zappa, APOSTROPHE/OVERNIGHT SENSATION (Rykodisk). Zappa is
perhaps an acquired taste, but I really liked this CD. Nice sound
to it (I don't have the LP's to compare it with) as well as good
music. Note that this is two separate albums combined on one CD
    for $21.99 (Lechmere price) --- it's a bargain.

Chuck Berry, ROCK AND ROLL RARITIES (Chess). This is a collection
of hits and lesser known songs. Some are "stereo remixes", some
"previously unreleased versions" (ie. usually different studio
takes), some the regular versions. Some of the cuts aren't that
inspiring, but a good many are really solid performances. The
amazing thing, though, is that the remastering is top notch. These
sound like recordings made yesterday rather than 25-30 years ago.
    Impressive.

jerry, I covet your Zappa disc. I've been able to find "The Grand
Wahzoo" (An aquired taste, indeed) and the "Shut Up and Play Your
Guitar" series which I haven't yet heard. Just have to keep my
    eyes open, I guess. Sigh....

I don't know where you're located but Rock 'n Mania in Framingham, MA
had a dozen copies of Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation @ 19.99 this past
    Saturday.

I picked up both "Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation" and "We're Only in it
for the Money/Lumpy Gravy" at the Minor Chord in Acton (in the same little
mall as Folsom's) for [$19.98 - ($5.00/3)] each on Friday night. The
also had "Frank Zappa Meets the Mothers of Prevention" on CD.

Don't eat that yellow snow,
Bob

       Thanks, jerry :^)

I found (and purchased) a copy of "Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation".
(Alas, I paid more than $19.99, but it's worth it.) Nothing truly
special about the sound quality except that there's no vail of clicks
and pops to listen through. The music itself is as fantastic as
I remember it. (Yes, I still have the LP's, but who listens to
LP's? :v) Now if we could just get FZ to give us "One Size Fits
    All" on CD.

The Road Warrior (Mad Max 2) Original Soundtrack. Music composed
and conducted by Brian May. Varese Sarabande VCD47262.

I've been hoping and praying Varese Sarabande would get into
CDs in a big way, and it looks like my dream will come true. The
recording level is a little lower than you might be used to, but
the disc is nice and clean. The last track has some of the movie
    sound effects in it.

A Charlie Brown Christmas. The Vince Guaraldi Trio. Fantasy Records
    FCD-697-8431.

All the music from the popular Christmas special. Awesome. For
jazz piano lovers, Christmas music lovers, Peanuts lovers, and just
    about anyone else.

Aliens Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Music composed and
conducted by James Horner, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.
    Varese Sarabande VCD47263

Even though Aliens was a huge hit, I didn't think anyone would
put together a soundtrack album, much less release it on CD. I
    was wrong, thank God.

While I am as loud a critic of James Horner as anyone for his
habit of assembling movie scores out of bits and pieces of previous
work, one has to give the man credit. I'm listening to the disc
right now, and I can see that last fight scene in my mind's eye.

There's an excellent photo of the whole cast in the inset that
comes with the CD. Sigourney Weaver has an absolutely priceless
    expression on her face.

346.13AKOV11::BOYAJIANThe Dread Pirate RobertsTue Dec 22 1987 03:1454
I've bought a bunch of stuff over the last couple of weeks, though
I probably won't remember them all.

Vanilla Fudge, VANILLA FUDGE. This is a great album (where else
can you hear covers of hits by the Supremes, the Zombies, the
Beatles, and Sonny & Cher, all in one place? :-)), but frankly,
the sound quality sucks. There is a terrible amount of hiss on
    this CD.

THE CHAMBERS BROTHERS GREATEST HITS. The CB's are among my favorite
little-known rock bands of the 60's, and I'm glad to finally see
a CD of them. This sounds really good, and has got what I consider
the CB's three classic hits: "In the Midnight Hour" (their version
is my favorite of this song), "People Get Ready", and "Time Has
Come Today". Definitely worth picking up, especially since it's
    one of CBS's bargain-priced CD's.

PIANO TWO. Even better than PIANO ONE. This starts off with three
impressive pieces, first one by Yanni, then two by Suzanne Cianni.
    Acoustic piano at its best.

Guy Van Duser, AMERICAN FINGER-STYLE GUITAR. This is a selection
of material from Van Duser's three solo albums. I would've preferred
to have the three complete albums on a double CD, but beggars can't
be choosers. If you haven't heard Van Duser play guitar, you're
in for a treat. The man is amazing. His solo guitar version of John
Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" has to be heard to be
    believed.

Renaissance, RENAISSANCE and ILLUSION. These are the first two
albums from this group. Or perhaps I should say the first group
with this name, since the line-up changed completely between the
second album and the third (except for Mike Dunford). I was a
bit surprised to hear what sounded more like a late-60's/early-70's
German progressive-rock band than what later Renaissance sounds
like, but I can't say I was displeased. Not what I expected, but
good stuff. Note: these are expensive German imports --- $22 each
    at Rockit Records.

Clannad, RING OF GOLD. I was quite surprised by this Clannad album,
which I'd never heard of. Judging from the contents, it looked to
be a compilation of material from their first three albums. Much
to my surprise and delight, it was a concert album instead. No,
it's not the same as CLANNAD IN CONCERT; with the exception of 2
songs, there's a completely different repetoire. Another expensive
    import.

Maddy Prior and the Carnival Band, A TAPESTRY OF CAROLS. A collection
of Christmas carols (many of them obscure and previously unknown
to me) sung by Maddy Prior of Steeleye Span. Wonderful stuff,
including "Angels in Their Realm of Glory", a variant of "Angels
We Have Heard on High" done as a Cajun fiddle tune!
