345.1 | Now I want "Islands" and "Red" | AMBER::EIRIKUR | Eirkur Hallgrmsson | Mon May 05 1986 13:43 | 17 |
| I have to second Jeff's recommendation of the Larks' Tongues CD.
The CD is (to my ears) considerably better than the special half-speed
LP was. The dynamics seem improved, too. This disc is a real treat.
The life-like dynamic range between the delicate violin/koto parts
and the sledgehammer electric guitar/electric bass is really something.
This makes most modern, over-produced, rock recordings sound sick.
I wonder if the limiting was applied during the LP mastering, and
not on the master tape? Perhaps EG is working from the multitrack
master. Now I need a sub-woofer. I know that the very low bass is
trying to shake the house, and my two 10-inch woofers just can't
do it.
I got it at BCD.
So, Jeff, where'd you find that Nice CD???

345.2 | More on The Nice | BARTOK::ARNOLD | John E. Arnold | Mon May 05 1986 14:34 | 9 |
| I found "The NICE Collection" at Strawberries in Shrewsbury, MA.
It's an import from England. I believe I got the only copy they
had out in the racks but it might be worth a call to see if they'll
get you one. As stated previously, the quality is what you'd expect
from the old recordings but, still, these old Nice songs without surface
noise and scratches are a worthwhile addition to my collection.
Now if only "The 5 Bridge Suite" would come out on CD...

| I found it at BCD. They had three copies when I was there.
Aye, the 5 bridges would be fab!
BTW-- I hope Starless and Bible Black apears. I really get into
Fractured.

345.4 | Red | SARAH::EIRIKUR | Eirkur Hallgrmsson | Fri Jun 27 1986 16:55 | 9 |
| Red. Need I say more? It's EG CD15. Lark's Tongues was CD7.
Hmmm.
It was the only copy at Newbury Comics, Harvard Square.
The sound is really fine--I always thought the LP was muddy. There's
something like tape saturation audible on "Fallen Angel."
The CD medium really rescues those pieces that rely on silent pauses.
I never learned to like them on my noisy early-seventies LP's.

345.6 | "In the Wake of Poseidon," and "Lizard!" | SARAH::EIRIKUR | Eirkur Hallgrmsson | Mon Sep 08 1986 12:20 | 14 |
| I picked up "In the Wake of Poseidon," and "Lizard" at BCD this
weekend. "In the Wake" has some not-so-great production/recording on
the louder cuts. We're talking about 1970 and (I believe) a small
studio. Still, it's a treat for my ears, the different Mellotron
voices jump out of the mix--on the LP they seemed to merge into
the murk at the back of the mix. "Lizard" sounds really fine.
Both of these discs have a large dynamic range. I suspect greater
than the LPs. No wonder the LPs had problems--I recall that the
silence-to-thunder were hard on my 1970-era stereo.
Strangely, although each cut has a great dynamic range, on the louder
cuts the drums are always lifeless. Perhaps they were seriously
compressed to avoid distortion on peaks.
